800 riders turn out for biggest Aus single-day race

A sunny day in Yarramundi in Sydney's West saw almost 800 competitors racing in the 4th annual 12hr at WSMTB Club, this year welcoming the awesome support from new naming sponsor N-ZO for the largest one-day mountain bike event in Australia.
With riders able to camp on the Friday night for the first time this year, many chose to take advantage of this opportunity and avoid the early drive. Either way, the N-ZO 12hr event centre was throbbing by 7am - a testament to the level of interest and support the riding community has in this spectacle of an event.
With kick-off at 9am, one rider from each team (and all of the soloists) headed down to the start for the running "le-mans style" start. The usual bedlam ensued, but all were off to a safe and fast start. The new location for the start this year allowed supporters and spectators to immediately watch the riders coming through for their first lap - a great sight and great encouragement for the riders.
The first lap of an endurance race is the most surreal for the event centre - hundreds of people gathered, watching, waiting, watching. The design of the Yellowmundee track thankfully has the course returning almost to the event centre at the halfway mark, which is great for the spectators.
Next was the mad-rush that is the first transition for all of the field sent the event centre into a frenzy that would continue throughout the rest of the day. With approximately 400 teams transitioning every hour, the transition area in the centre of the event centre is a busy place indeed. All of the sponsors were gathered tightly around the transition area in marquees, making the cvent centre a fun place too - giveaways and freebees were available for all throughout the event.
Plenty of action was available for the supporters and for the team-riders while they were not competing too - from regular competitions, constant prize give-aways, and food and drink of unimaginable quality given it was being served in the middle of the bush!
The lead swayed in each of the categories throughout the day, with the tussle in the solo men the most exciting - after 5 hours only 2 minutes separated the top two riders.
As daylight faded, the most special part of the epic that is the N-Zo 12hr came to the fore. While many of the "24 hour" races allow riders to throw on their NiteRider lights and ride all night, this usually turns into a battle of mere survival (and some pain through the cold, wee hours of the morning. The 12hr, on the other hand, only has 3.5 hours of darkness - meaning all are well and truly still racing!
The challenge was only added to this year by the storms that came in, meaning that most of the night section was also a wet ride too! Most riders chose to ignore the rain and press on, some even claiming that night-riding in the rain is better than riding at dry in the day!
While it's amazing to see the riders throughout the day, watching the dancing beams of light dissect the forest at night is a sight that has to be seen to fully appreciate the sheer magic within.
9pm did finally arrive, with many of the riders wanting that little more, and many thankful that all that is required is to finish the lap they're on!
The presentation ceremony saw over $15,000 of prizes distributed to the winners, and a lucky draw that allowed anyone entered to win an assortment of high-value items.
Winning the men's solo for the second time was Southern Highland's rider James Williamson, while the women's solo was taken out by endurance mountain-biking veteran Mel McIntyre (a regular top-3 finisher in past years).
The overall women's team battle was won by a three-person team, comprising Imogen Smith, Kimberley Fleming and Maria Papadopolous. The overall men's team winner was amazingly won by just a pair of men (who completed more laps than any of the three or four man teams too!), Richard Vollebregt and Sean Lewis.
Western Sydney Mountain bike club would like to thank all of the riders for turning up and being part of such an amazing race, the club committee and race volunteers that make the event happen, and all of the sponsors without whom the event just couldn't happen!.
