With blue skies and 25°C temperatures, 113 riders from all over the state had a real day out in the saddle, with all seeming to have a good time. It was good to see such a strong representation for this first race, just one week after the Mont 24hr and unfortunately clashing with the 'Around the Bay in a Day' ride. When it got down to racing the pace was on with the majority of climbing done in the first two kilometres, giving some riders a good opportunity to open up a lead. In the Elite men Murray Spink was strong, his win coming after a good recovery from an early puncture, proving once again he's going to be the man to beat. Tim Hucker made a come back to summer mtb racing, just edging out the in-form Russell Collett, with new comer to the elite field Joe Read only a few seconds back in third. In the Expert men's race, Alistair Douglas led all day only to be beaten to the post in the final lap by Andrew Patterson with Rohin Adams, on a borrowed bike after overcoming some early technical problems, riding from last position into third. It wasn't without a challenge from Cam Winn, who responded strongly but just couldn't quite hang on for the final three laps. Other classes saw good close races across the board and plenty of promise for the rest of the series. The next race is at Beaconsfield on October 31, hosted by the Dirtriders and we look forward to another good race. The news of the FTF president's Scapin race bike being stolen, along with the club's 1kva Honda Generator and chainsaw was extremely frustrating for the crew preparing to put on a huge race. It's just a shame that while Rohin's car was in Ivanhoe as he was out setting up the course, somebody decided to break a window and steal the items in broad daylight, leaving the cost of replacement close to $10,000. We call on all the mtb community to keep an eye out in your area and local second hand stores for the yellow and black Scapin, Honda generator and chainsaw. If you see anything, please contact the police so they can investigate.
