Cyclo-Cross World Cup #9 - CDMNommay, France, January 16, 20052004 Results Results Past Winners Nys gets his fifth
The seemingly unstoppable Sven Nys (Rabobank) has won his fifth World Cup race of the season in Nommay, leading home a Belgian avalanche that saw five Belgians claim the first five places. It was also Nys' 19th win of the season, as he beat Tom Vannoppen (Palmans), Sven Vanthourenhout (Rabobank), Erwin Vervecken (Fidea) and Davy Commeyne (Palmans-Sapim). Swiss rider Christian Heule was the first non-Belgian home in sixth place. The race started with Italian champion Enrico Franzoi (Lampre-Cafitta) leading the way out of the blocks, before a group of six riders formed on the first lap, including Nys, Heule, Vannoppen, Commeyne, Gadret (Chocolade Jacques) and Lars Boom (Rabobank). Although four of these riders would go on to finish in the top six, there was a regrouping as Nys and Gadret were joined by Sven Vanthourenhout on lap 3. They were chased and caught by Vannoppen, Commeyne, Franzoi and Vervecken, as last year's winner Bart Wellens pulled out, well out of the running. The seven leaders were cuaght by Richard Groenendaal (Rabobank) and Christian Heule to form a group of nine by lap four. Unfortunately for Gadret, he lost contact due to a mechanical, while Franzoi paid for his early efforts and also dropped off. Meanwhile, Lars Boom made it back up to the leaders which meant that there were four Rabobank riders in the top eight. On the fifth lap, three of them went on the attack: Nys, Vanthourenhout and Boom, which blew the leading group apart. Heule, Vannoppen and Commmeyne formed a chase group behind the Rabobank trio, but on the next lap Nys attacked and was on his way to victory. After Lars Boom fell back, Vanthourenhout was caught by Vannoppen, who attacked him on the final lap to take second place behind Nys.
