Ferguson takes Ulster title, Seymour wins race
Recent cyclo-cross league winner Lewis Ferguson scooped another good trophy
yesterday when he raced home ahead of Robbie Lamont and Andy Lahye in the Ulster
championships at Lurgan Park.
Wicklow rider Robin Seymour was actually first across the line, finishing well
ahead of Ferguson and so continuing his preparations for the World Championships
in St Wendel next Sunday. However, as the first Ulster rider past the post,
the BMB rider took the title. A field of 17 riders turned out for the Apollo
CC-promoted event, a disappointing number considering the work that went into
running the race. Halfway around the opening lap Seymour and Ferguson pulled
clear of the rest of the field, with Layhe and Lamont engaged in their own private
tussle behind. Seymour then struck out alone on the second lap, rapidly gaining
time on Ferguson and, by the end, lapping all other riders in the race.
Three minutes and 45 seconds after Seymour crossed the line Ferguson raced
in to become the new Ulster champion. Lamont and Layhe took silver and bronze,
with Drew McKinley fifth and Matt Ferguson sixth. Cycleways Lee Strand's Francis
Blake-Dillon had been scrapping with McKinley but slipped back to seventh after
breaking his rear mech. Apollo rider Alister McSorley was eighth, one place
ahead of his father Fred, while Banbridge CC rider Bob Patterson completed the
top ten. Medals were also awarded in the youth events. The Under 16 contest
saw Andy Hunter outsprint his XMTB team-mate Neil McGimpsey to win his first
championship. Christy Brown (Bike Dock) took bronze. Banbridge CC's Sean Downey
dominated the U14 race ahead of Liam McGreevy (Banbridge CC) and XMTB's Johnny
Beers, while Michael Runciman, Michael Downey (both Banbridge CC) and Robbie
Lamont (XMTB) were first three under 12s. Banbridge duo Mark Downey and Daniel
Runciman were first and second in the under 10 race, ahead of Sean McCormick.
