Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Hi-techBikes.com World Cup QualifierSan Diego, CA, USA, February 28-March 2Day 3 - Track records fallSunday was the day that will leave a good impression on the minds of the racers and fans. The weather was beautiful with some wind but a full day of sunshine made it all worthwhile. Although the breeze was not the best condition for time trials, the men's kilo and women's 500 turned out some very fast times for this relatively slow track. At just 100 feet above sea level and open to all conditions there won't be any world records posted here any time soon. But Marty Nothstein with his 1.08.58 Kilo time just set a new elite track record. Tanya Lindenmuth also set the new track record in the women's 500 with a time of 36.234 seconds. At a speed of almost 50k an hour, that time will be hard to beat for the San Diego locals. But elite racing will be back in San Diego very soon to challenge these new records. There were some definite alliances in the women's points race as Erin Mirabella, one of the strongest in the bunch, was shadowed by Becky Quinn throughout the length of the race. This allowed some lesser-known names to make some moves that stuck. Ashley Kimmet took two laps on the field with her relentless attacks and steady pace out in the wind. Terry Roach, Master's World Champion, end up taking one lap on the field along with Jenn Scott and Annette Hanson. But as the laps ran down it was Kimmet with her one lap advantage over the other three riders that gave her the edge to take the win. The Madison, although not a qualifying event for the World Cup in Mexico was a great spectator event. With teams like Nothstein and Freidick, Pearce and Saunders, and The Two Fragile Mice, Farrar and Creed, there was bound to be action. And action there was. The 120-lap event showcased America's finest track and road talent. But in the end it was the Two Fragile Mice who took the victory and the nice paycheck back their road training camps. Sunday also provided excitement in the team sprint. Although teams were setting qualification times based on the full length of the race, individual riders were trying to qualify for positions on the U.S. sprint team based on their individual lap times. Terry Tenette, a pro BMXer, wowed the crowd when he blasted off the line in this standing start race. His teammate, Mike Beers, the reigning Kilo Champ, was unable to catch the wheel of 'Flash' Tenette to get any kind of draft. Although their overall time didn't qualify them for the finals at the end of the day, Tenette's first lap time might just as well have qualified him for the big race in Mexico. At the end of the day, it was Team Focus 2004 that posted the fasted time in the finals with a 1.06.6. PhotosImages by Mike Gladu/velodrome.com
