Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Hi-techBikes.com World Cup QualifierSan Diego, CA, USA, February 28-March 2Day 2 - A sprinters dayThe stands were packed with spectators at the San Diego for day two action. Today was mostly a sprinters day with just a quick 40k Points Race, along with qualifiers, thrown in for fun. The day was slightly warmer and windy again, but no rain and definitely no boring racing. The men's sprint and women's sprint action was very fast and very competitive. San Diego hasn't seen this caliber of riders in years and the crowd was on its feet numerous times throughout the day. In the end, it was Tanya Lindenmuth and Stephen Alfred taking the top positions in the multiple round race. Some of the best sprint action came out of the 3rd-4th place Men's race. Mark Guerin (Cody Racing) and Jamie Staff (GBR) had two very close finishes that has the crowd waiting for the officials to make the calls off the photos. In the end though it was Staff who powered away from Guerin in the final race to take the podium position. The men's point race was fast from the gun with a break of six forming within a couple laps. The break looked like it had some momentum to lap the group but the first sprint separated the weak from strong instantly. Some racers, like David Klipper, were never to be seen again as they were shelled from the main group not too long after. Once again the crowd was at their feet to cheer on Eric Saunders (Ofoto-Lombardi) who left the group multiple times to challenge the wind himself. He was solo for a long time with a good half lap lead. Many times was just about to catch the group when the bell would ring and the group would ramp it up for the sprint. More than midway through this 90 lap monster, Michael Creed and Ofoto teammate Colby Pearce made a swift move up to Saunders. This move eventually gained these three a lap and a 20-point bonus. Saunders couldn't be more happy to share the pain of the windy conditions. The race was far from over though with 27 laps to go and a great field of riders. Saunders, Pearce and Creed each strong in the own right, put forth multiple attacks to try to break the stride of the others. However, in the end it was Saunders, with the crowd behind him, that took the victory. PhotosImages by Mitchell Clinton/clintonphoto.com
