Biggleswade Sports Grass Track Meeting

Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, July 13, 2002

On the Grass

by Trevor Reade

24 Riders took part in the 2002 edition of the Biggleswade Sports Grass Track meeting under a clear blue sky.

Although last years star performer Andy Stuart (Mildenhall CC) had entered the event work committments in Italy prevented him from returning to the UK in time to compete.

James Holland Leader of the Scunthorpe Polytechnic Cycling Club took home the lions share of the 250GBP prize list with wins in the 400 metre handicap, devil take the hindmost and the premier event of the afternoon the five mile scratch.

The bunch remained complete on the hard and fast 350 metre grass track during the early laps of the five mile scratch. After just 7 of the 25 laps a crash brought down three riders and the race was stopped while the medical crew attended to Ali Smith (Chesterfield Coureurs), who landed heavily. Smith was not seriously hurt but did not take the restart.

After a number of fruitless attacks by Guy Cook (Chesterfield Coureurs) and Simon Layfield (Team Welywn) Holland-Leader attacked with five laps to go and quickly opened up a 100 metre lead which, despite hard work by the remanants of the bunch, he held to take the victory.

Guy Cook outsprinted Neil Lewis (North Road CC) for second.

Sarra Whelan (Eastern Region Velo) took a clean sweep of the Ladies events.
