ESCA Meadowbank Track League

July 9, 2002

International field as Commonwealth Games approaches

Martin Lonie (Cyclingscotland) topped the score board in some of the best racing seen at Meadowbank Track League in recent years during the ninth round of the 2002 competition.

In an international class field, with the visiting Trinidad Commonwealth Games Squad and Bank of Scotland Scottish Commonwealth Games team members amongst those competing, it was Lonie who won the 40 lap scratch which together with 2 second places in the 15 lap warm up race and Devil and a heat win in the handicap was enough to score a total of 9 points. Not far behind was teammate Ross Muir on 7 points with wins in the 15 lap scratch and Devil together with a point in the consolation Italian Pursuit.

Sprint specialist Marco Librizzi (City of Edinburgh RC / Continental / Classic Walls) showed the benefit of some training in Germany with the British Sprint Squad in preparation for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in winning the 500m handicap from Trinidad riders Elisha Greene and Clinton Grant in what was a perfect example of handicapping with all finalists coming over the line in a blanket finish.

Lonie and Muir now tie with 15 points at the top of the B Season League, with Junior rider Stephen Robertson (Glasgow Couriers) lying in 3rd place on 8 points.

In the combined A & B Season League, Evan Oliphant remains at the top of the board on 55 points, although Darren Howitt has closed slightly on 44 points. Robertson continues to top the Junior league.

In the Womens league, Emily Forde capitalised on the absence of Kate Cullen to move 8 points clear of her rival after winning the Women & Youth Sprint. Junior rider Jane Leask continues to hold third place.

In a close Youth competition, Kevin Barclay (Edinburgh Racers) remains at the top of the league, only 1 point ahead of Lisa Kinroy with Thomas Mackay a further point adrift. 13 year old Shane Charlton (Kingdom RT) continues to make good progress in the league despite a late start to the season and is only three points adrift. Charlton looks an exciting prospect on the track able to compete admirably with the senior B riders in some events.
