Amsterdam Six Day - 6DNetherlands, October 21-26, 2002Main Page Results Photos Previous Day Day 6 - October 26Martinello/Villa beat Stam/Slippens on final dayItalian pair Silvio Martinello and Marco Villa have triumphed on the final day in the Six Days of Amsterdam, beating local hopes Danny Stam and Robert Slippens by just 10 points in a very close battle. Stam/Slippens had led coming into the final day, but the Italians consistently outscored them in each event on the program. In third place were last year's champions Scott McGrory and Matthew Gilmore, who regained a lap in the final madison, but did not have enough points to overhaul the leading two pairs. Also finishing on the same lap were Swiss pair Bruno Risi/Kurt Betschart, winners of the last madison. Martinello/Villa started well by winning the classement sprints and team elimination race. Stam/Slippens were stronger in the paired 400m time trial, but Martinello picked up more valuable points in the elimination race, where he finished third. The final madison saw Betschart/Risi and McGrory/Gilmore take a lap out of the two leading pairs, but it wasn't enough to threaten them. Martinello/Villa gained another 6 points over their Dutch rivals in this race, securing them the overall classification by 10 points. In the Sprinters Cup, Dutchman Teun Mulder won with a healthy margin over compatriot Sebastiaan Baanders and South African Dean Edwards, while in the Junior 3 Days, Belgians Steve Schets and Ingmar De Poortere dominated their opposition to finish 28 points clear of Tim Roels/Davy Tuytens, also from Belgium.
