Day 1 - November 22, 2002

Australia vs Japan show-down at the Speed Dome

By Dave Budge

It was a great night of racing with Perth cycling fans being treated to an exciting display of Keirin and endurance events. The last international event held at the Speed Dome was the 97 World Championships, so an event of this nature was long overdue.

The evening kicked off with the men's 20k scratch race, Graeme Brown timing his run to the line with absolute perfection to edge out local boy and crowd favourite Peter Dawson and the evergreen Paul Dobson taking third.

Then it was time for the big boys to step on the track. The format of the Keirin racing for the program was a teams challenge between the "rainbow train" Australian Team featuring Sean Eadie, Jobie Dajka, Ryan Bayley and Ben Kersten, the Japanese with Toshiyuki Ono, Akihiro Isezaki, Takasi Kaneko and Yuichiro Maesori and the Speed Dome Allstars - Greg McFarlane, Jason Niblett, Mark French and Darren Harry.

The Australian team gave the crowd just what they wanted to see in the first race with Dajka and Eadie taking out the quinella. Ryan Bayley racing in front of his home crowd for the first time since winning the 2001 World Keirin title showed hadn't lost any speed from his post 2002 World's break when he rode off the front to comfortably take out race two.

Dajka and Eadie showed no ill effects from jet lag from the thirty hour flight from Boudreaux taking out races four and five, putting the Australian team in a strong position to take out the Teams award.

Not to be outdone by the Aussie the Japanese stepped up in race 5 with Toshiyuki Ono and Yuichiro Maesori getting a fly from a lap and a half out to go over the line first and second.

In the final Keirin race the reigning World Keirin Champion Jobie Dajka made it three in a row by edging out Mark French and Greg McFarlane.

The second part of the event continues on Sunday afternoon with a combination of Keirin, Derby and endurance events.
