Burnaby Velodrome Club - Race #1November 8-11, 2002Williams Dominates Burnaby MeetBy Gordon Ross After a full season of racing road and track throughout the Pacific Northwest, as well as an impressive medal-winning performance at US National Track Championships in August, Kenny Williams (Saturn of Bellevue) demonstrated he still has some great form at the Burnaby Velodrome Race Series #1. Taking the Category A Omnium title, Williams took top spot in every event but one: the Olympic Sprint, in which his three man team took second spot. Held under a driving rain for the full two days of competition, all competitors remained dry and all events were run on schedule at North America's only indoor velodrome. The event was the return of racing to the Burnaby facility after being closed for a year by its owner, the City of Burnaby. The Burnaby Velodrome Club and Cycling BC worked hard to get the building re-opened and since September 4th 2002, cyclists have been able to enjoy the 200M wood track with its 47 degree corners. Williams' track experience was challenged throughout the weekend by the speed of Hong Kong National Team member, Chester Lam, and Vancouver's Murray Solem (Schwalbe/Epic). Arriving only a few days before the event from Hong Kong, Lam managed to impress the crowd and fellow riders with some impressive speed. Home-track favourite Solem rode a solid weekend, picking up Omnium points in several events. Fresh off his Canadian National Team debut riding the World Jr. Road Championships in Zolder, Belgium, 17 year-old Marsh Cooper (Devo/Powerbar/Escape Velocity) rode agressively in the Scratch and Points Race events. Cooper kept the pace high with his frequent attacks. No stranger to the track, Cooper has competed in the last two Canadian National Track Championships and currently holds the 2002 Canadian National Crit Champion title. He finished his weekend off with an impressive second place to Williams in the 3000M pursuit. In the B Group, Seattle's Brian Kennan (Byrne Speciality Gases) took the overall title ahead of Oregon's Chancey Curl (Team Rubicon) and Vancouver's Gord Ross (Escape Velocity) which included two hard-fought battles against Ross in the Scratch and Points Races. World Masters Track Champion in the Pursuit, Annette Hanson (Team Rubicon) put in a great ride for second place in the B Group Kilo event, very nearly taking first place from Mark Emery (Team Atomic). Wrapping up the event was a 60 lap Madison, in which 4 teams competed. Always an exciting event to watch, the madison team of Chester Lam and Trinidad native/Denver resident Ryan Sabga (Pista Elite) executed their hand-slings to perfection, lapping the rest of the field, with locals Scott Laliberte and Murray Solem coming in second, and the team of Jeremy Storie and Paul Clement coming in third. The event had representation from all Pacific Northwest tracks, with riders from the Juan de Fuca Velodrome (Victoria, BC), Marymoor Velodrome (Washington), and Alpenrose Velodrome (Oregon), as well as drawing out-of-towners Lam from Hong Kong and Sabga from Denver. The next event will be Burnaby Velodrome Race Series #2, scheduled for the weekend of February 15/16th, 2002. PhotographyImages by David Fayram
