Dean pips McCauley in nailbiting win

Top-ranked NZ professional Julian Dean won the North Island Elimination Championships held Saturday at the Manukau Velodrome. Dean beat 2nd placed NZ road & time trial title-holder Gordon McCauley for a nailbiting win.

The Women's Elimination came down to a battle fought out between Sarah Ulmer, NZ road champion Annalissa Farrell & North Island Keirin Champion Elizabeth Williams. It was Williams who prevailed using her rapid sprint to overcome her endurance-based rivals, just pipping Ulmer to the line.

In the sprint events, Commonwealth representative Justin Grace held off Briton Neil Campbell to take the Sprint Derby with Campbell reversing the honours in the Keirin event.

The meeting, which doubles as the first event of the North Island Summer Track Series, saw the return of the motor-paced Derny Race with cyclists following motorbikes at speeds up to 80km/h. This crowd-favourite saw NZ Development rider Richard Bowker take line honours from a fast-finishing Dean.

The next race in the Series will be held at the Wanganui Velodrome on Saturday January 18.
