Victoria defend with class in men's team pursuit

Just one rider, Sean Finning, was part of the Victorian team pursuit squad that won the National title last year, but that didn't stop them from once again taking out the title by almost catching NSW in the final in 4:09:334, a time that was more than eight seconds faster than their qualifying time earlier today.

"It's great to keep the run going. Obviously I am the only one here from last year, but the riders that we had come in are junior world champions, so it definitely wasn't the worst team for it [the race]," said Finning, 23 year-old veteran of the team.

"I am really happy how we rode together today."

Finning's team-mates, Glen O'Shea, James Langedyk and Leigh Howard, were all members of the 2007 junior world championship team that took the win in Mexico and were more than up to the task of riding alongside Finning.

"I felt really good. Two years ago at the Junior Worlds I didn't even finish the team's pursuit, so to go out there today and pull a two-lap turn was fantastic. I felt really comfortable; it shows that I am good form," Howard explained.

The Victorian team went out hard to grab an early lead over the young NSW squad. After just one kilometre Victoria had a 0.6-second lead that it continued to expand upon right to the line, three kilometres later. In fact, going into the final kilometre Victoria had the NSW in the same straight. However, showing true grit the NSW squad gallantly held it off to ride the full distance.

A strong Tasmanian squad lead by Mark Jamieson proved too strong for the young West Australian, who was declared the winner of the under-19 team pursuit after qualifying fourth fastest in the open event, to take the bronze medal. Jamieson once again showed his class by taking control of the Tasmanian team, taking three lap turns, and pull them clear of WA squad to almost single-handedly guide it to the final place on the podium.

The ACT and NSW's other team, were both assured a medal as they contested the silver / bronze ride off in the under-19 team pursuit. Showing its strength, ACT pulled clear of the NSW squad early to take the Silver as NSW faded dramatically in the final kilometre.

Junior men U19 scratch race

Scott Law took his second national title of the championships after he won the Under-19 scratch race. "I felt great. This is more of an endurance event; I have been training more for the Kilo and the sprint events," he said shortly after receiving his gold medal. He started his winnin gsprint with a lap and a half to go.

The first-year junior, who is on target for a World Championships berth later this year, started his sprint early, sensing that the race would get away from him otherwise. "With a lap and a half to go, I thought that this is a good a chance as any so I went," he explained.

The race was full of attacks as every rider fancied their chances to take out the title, but due to the high pace, no one was able to stay away for longer than a few laps at a time. Each time that a break was brought back, another was launched.

With just three laps remaining, the whole field was back together as Law, Luke Davidson and Stephen Hall – possibly the quickest sprinters in the event were sitting close to the front of the field, waiting for the bell to launch their sprints. As Law went with one and a half to go, Hall, who was clearly struggling with the burst of speed, faded as Jamie Crass moved to within striking distance.

Law was too strong for them all, and he held his speed all the way to the line to take the title from Crass and Davidson.

French takes a flier in the men's Sprint

Ryan Bayley was granted a start in the gold medal match up, courtesy of the disqualification his soon to be brother-in-law, Shane Perkins, after the two collided in the final sprint heat of their semi-final. However Bayley was unable to capitalize on this as he was beaten by an in-form Mark French in the minimum, two heats.

"It was a good hard ride. I had the chance to go so I took it," French said of his move with two and half laps remaining in the second heat that secured him the win.

After a first heat that came down to the line, with French just pipping the defending Olympic champion for the win, the two lined up for a rematch, which Bayley had to win to stay in contention for the win. But as Bayley backed off the wheel of French by some five metres, French pounced on his more favoured component to take off a long way from home, taking the second heat and the national title.

"It's really good that French rode well, he normally rides crap," Bayley said shortly after the race.

"He is always fast, but his tactics let him down sometimes, so it is good to see him riding well," he added.

Shane Perkins came back from the disappointment of his disqualification from the second heat to take the Bronze medal in just two heats from Jason Niblett.
