Revolution 18 brings out the champions

The 18th Revolution track meeting at Manchester Velodrome saw a near capacity crowd enjoying an evening of exciting racing from experienced six day track races professionals: talented junior sprinters (both male and female) from England, France and Germany, and seeing Britain's new crop of up and coming riders' progress through to the international ranks. Younger age groups rounded out the night in the Future Stars competition, sponsored by DHL.
World champions in virtually every discipline on the track made appearances for the event – from junior world champions in the sprint series through to world points race champion Joan Llaneras, world pursuit champion and Olympic pursuit champion Bradley Wiggins and world Madison champion Franco Marvulli.
For the six day stars, Revolution 18 was a change of format and an opportunity to please a different crowd. Fresh from wins in the Dortmund Six and Munich Six, Swiss ace Franco Marvulli showed his blistering pace to win the Men's Motor Paced Scratch. Belgium's Iljo Keisse kept a fairly low profile, but his natural talent still shone through. Keisse won the Amsterdam Six earlier this season, and is readying himself for some hard racing in this week's Gent Six, which he starts as hot favourite and local hero.

But Keisse was not the only trackie born in Gent at Revolution 18 - Britain's Bradley Wiggins used Revolution 18 to find his track legs again after a long season on the road, and having won the Gent Six before with Matt Gilmore, Wiggins will be keen to notch up another six day win when he rides in Gent with Mark Cavendish (himself a former world madison champion). With addition racers, such as Peter Schep from the Netherlands, Joan Llaneras from Spain and Stefan Steinweg from Germany, the Manchester crowd got to see a good range of top six day riders.
However, the experienced track pros did not have it all there own way. Ben Swift and Jonathan Bellis of the 100% Me team won the 1km Madison time trial, beating all the top six day riders to do so. For Swift, who used to race in the local track league at Manchester when he was a youngster, it marks their arrival on the international stage.
The men's and women's sprint series were both top-level international sprinting. The English and German girls all rode to a very high standard, with track stands and skilful riding matched by top-end speed. The British girls had to work hard to beat the German team. For the male sprinters, the visiting French team pushed Britain's young sprinters very hard, winning the sprint competition and the team sprint.
