Risi and Marvulli move into overall lead

A night of fast paced action culminated in the Swiss pair, Bruno Risi and Franco Marvulli (Tartuffe-Labo Van Vooren) moving into the overall lead on night four of the Gent Six Day. The Madison World Champions displayed their class when they took an all important lap from last nights leaders, Iljo Keisse and Robert Bartko (Chocolade Jacques). Joining Risi and Marvulli on the zero round are the Dutch pair of Danny Stam and Robert Slippens who ended the evening in second after taking a lap in the nights' first Madison.
Keisse and Bartko dropped to third after losing the lap, but are by no means out of contention as they hold 268 points to Risi/Marvulli's 265, while second placed Stam/Slippens have 229. The hometown favourite and his German powerhouse partner will surely go on the attack in the coming nights to try and steal the lap back.
How it unfolded
Day four's opening Madison was taken by Dutchmen Slippens and Stam, who had finished third in yesterday's running. They were able to hold onto a one lap lead over the following top five duos, including the experienced pair of Kiesse and Bartko. The Belgian and German kept the overall lead heading into the following derny race.
The first of two derny races saw Bradley Wiggins shine in a two-up match with Steven Deneef. The British rider with roots in Gent made his move on the outside from last spot with 12 laps to go. He hounded Belgian Deneef with Marc Hester chasing in third, but fading. Wiggins followed pacer Joop Zijlaard to make his move in the final lap, taking the win by coming around the outside.
The elimination saw Matthé Pronk, Dimitri De Fauw and Steve Schets hang on to fight for the 15 points on offer. In the penultimate elimination, Dutchman Pronk punched it and Belgian Schets could not match it. Pronk led into the final lap where De Fauw made his move in the final 100 metres to win by a wheel's length.
The second derny was an exciting affair as fans got behind the domination of Kenny De Ketele. The Belgian made his move after the mid-race lead by Marvulli. The Swiss faded and De Ketele moved into the lead with the Bartko threatening. Bartko ignited the duel at eight laps to go. De Ketele, not wanting to let the German go, joined him while Slippens bridged across to the duo shortly after. At two laps remaining it was down to three: De Ketele on the inside, Bartko and Slippens on the outside - De Ketele did not disappoint, and took the win.

In the 500-metre time trial, the crowd was getting pumped up by the time world champion duo Risi/Marvulli hit the track. They ignited the boards to put in the best time so far at 28.63. The fans went even crazier when Bartko and Keisse hit out. The German's hand sling set up his Belgian team-mate and put the crowd into a frenzy. Their time of 28.12 ensured they stayed in the overall lead, moving from 242 to 257, 11 points over Risi/Marvulli.
The second Madison of the evening saw a good run by UK riders Wiggins and Mark Cavendish; however the experience track duos were able to prevail. Risi/Marvulli and Kiesse/Bartko led for most of the finale, with a late charge by Andreas Beikirch and Erik Mohs. Before the start of the last ten laps, the fortunes changed for Wiggins and Cavendish. The duo made a surge to join in the same lap as the leaders. With one lap to go, it was down to Risi, Beikirch and Wiggins. Wiggins, in his green top, faded mid-way around to finish third, while Risi picked up the sprint for his team over Beikirch. The World Champion duo now led the overall by 60 points to Stam/Slippens with Keisse/Bartko one lap behind.
The Supersprint was taken by Czech duo Petr Lazar and Alois Kankovsky over De Fauw and Alexander Aeschbach and Wim Stroetinga/Pronk. They gained 15 points towards the overall. In the following Keirin event, it was Dane Marc Hester who took top honours over Deneef.
The third derny of the evening saw a hotly contested finale, with local rider Keisse, facing up to Stam and World Champ Risi. Risi led out the start of two laps to go with Stam under him and Keisse moving hard on the outside. The rider from Gent lifted and slammed his front wheel through the backstretch of the final lap in what looked like frustration, however it was extra energy to burn as he succeeded in winning over Risi and Stam.

The final elimination event of day four saw Ingmar Depoortere, De Ketele, Aeschbach and Slippens contest the finale. Aeschbach and then Depoortere were eliminated leaving a Dutch/Belgian dual. The Belgian, De Ketele lost out this time as he led through the final lap but was unable to hold off Slippens on his outside, who gained 15 points towards his team with the win.
In the final derny of the evening it was Lazar, Tim Mertens, De Fauw with Cavendish moving up at ten laps to go. De Fauw eventually dropped off the pace with six laps to go. Mertens and Lazar continued to lead with three laps remaining, while Cavendish was some three metres back. Lazar moved into the lead at the start of the final lap, but it was the Belgian De Fauw who made a huge and surprising charge to catch the leading trio sleeping and win.
Slippens led out the final lap of the last Keirin but could not hold off the charge of Kankovsky. The night ended with Risi/Marvulli at 265 points.
