Juniors: Perfect scores for two

Victorian under 17 all rounder Leigh Howard emerged from the national titles meet as the undisputed champion of champions.

The 15-year-old Grovedale College Year 10 student had a perfect score, six gold medals, achieved in individual sprint, pursuit, time trial and scratch race events plus the teams pursuit and teams sprint.

Equally impressive was NSW under 15 rider, Megan Dunn who took the time trial, sprint, individual pursuit and scratch race championships in her division.

Victorian Patrick Drapac missed a similar distinction through being beaten by 0.04sec by Scott Law (NSW) in the time trial. Drapac and Law staged a two-man war in under 15 competition with Law finishing second to the Brunswick rider in the sprint, individual pursuit and scratch race.

Similarly, Sinead Cosgrove had to play second fiddle to Dunn in under 15 events picking up silver medals in the sprint, pursuit and time trial and she took bronze in the scratch race. Her bronze medal was a notable achievement as she crashed early in the race but rejoined the contest and just failed to run down Carly McCoombe (V) in the run to the line.

Western Australia dominated under 17 women's events through Josephine Tomic and Josephine Butler.

Queenslander, Philippa Hindmarsh prevented a western clean sweep when she beat Tomic in the sprint. Tomic took gold in the individual pursuit, time trial and teams sprint with Butler winning the scratch race title. Only 0.587sec separated the medallists in the under 17 women's 500m time trial which opened proceedings on the final day of competition. Tomic (38.660) took her second gold medal of the meet, beating Lisa Friend (V 39.025) with Butler clocking 39.247. The next four riders were less than a second outside Tomic's time, including Western Australians Rebecca MacPherson and Sarah Kent and Victorian Georgina Freeland which was to prove an accurate form guide for the teams sprint later in the program.

The Western Australians provided the quinella in the two-rider team tussle with Victoria taking the bronze. MacPherson teamed up with Tomic and they were the top qualifiers (38.004), just 0.196 clear of Butler and Kent with the Friend-Freeland combination clocking 38.354 and Queenslanders Jessy Byrnes and Philippa Hindmarsh making it through to the medal round with a time of 38.918. Qualifying positions held up in the finals with MacPherson-Tomic taking gold ahead of Butler-Kent with the Victorians as bronze medallists.

The junior men's team sprint was even closer. The Victorian trio of Leigh Howard, Matthew Wood and Trevor Griffiths was the top qualifier in 50.016 but Queenslanders, Lachlan Plane, Joel Lewis and Byron Davis were perilously close, stopping the clock 50.071. South Australia (Christos Winter, Mark Glowacki and Jack Bobridge) qualified for the bronze medal rider off against the ACT trio of Alastair Loutit, Matthew Meisel-Dennis and Tom Palmer.

The final was even closer than the 0.055sec which separated the teams in round one, Howard reining in the slight advantage Queensland had established in the first two laps to give Victoria victory and Howard his fifth gold medal by 0.012sec. The bronze medal was won by South Australia.

Commissaires were kept busy in the qualifying rounds and finals of the scratch races, which brought down the curtain on the 2005 championships. In the qualifying round of the under 15 men, Tasmanian Peter Loft was disqualified for dangerous riding while in the under 17 men's qualifying round, Rueben Young (SA) was fined $50 for failing to ride out the race; Christos Winter (SA) was warned for not riding a straight line in the bottom bend and Ricky Peoples (V) was disqualified from the placing for finishing on the blue.

As expected, Megan Dunn (NSW) added the under 15 women's scratch race championship to her list of achievements when she cleared out along the back straight after getting the bell but a battle royale ensued for the other medals. Carly McCoombe (V), who had taken the lead at the bell, was able to withstand a powerful surge from Sinead Cosgrove (NSW) who had fallen earlier in the race.

A fall with 1 ½ laps to go proved fortuitous for Victoria's Patrick Drapac who went on to win the under men's 15 scratch race. His team mate, Warren Moore and Western Australians, Chris Cinanni and Jordan Van Der Togt came to grief on the eastern bend as the pace came on and this opened a gap for Drapac who, at that stage, was hopelessly boxed in mid-field.

Once clear, Drapac was able to unleash his trademark burst of speed and he went on to win his third national title ahead of Scott Law (NSW) and Queenslander Ivan Cook. The under 17 women's field remained upright all race with Josephine Butler (WA) surging clear coming to the final bend leaving Natasha Pearse (NSW) and Lisa Friend (V) to battle for the other medals.

Victoria produced the quinella in the under 17 championship with Leigh Howard given the perfect lead out by team mate Peter Johnstone after the pair had controlled much of the race. Howard was lengths clear to make it a personal clean sweep of under 17 events but Johnstone was able to maintain his tempo to take a well-earned silver medal ahead of the fast finishing Jack Bobridge (SA). The new champion paid tribute to Johnstone's effort. "This," he said, indicating the gold medal around his neck, "is as much Pete's as it is mine."

Peter Trott (NT) who was responsible to upping the pace mid race as riders tried to carry out team tactics, fell with 3 ¼ laps to go and commissaries warned Joshua Edwards (Q) for dangerous riding with 3 ½ laps to go.

On the back of Howard's amazing performances Victoria retained the Ray Godkin Shield. The award, named in honour of the former Cycling Australia president who is now UCI vice president, has been held by Victoria since it was established in 2001.

Howard who had earlier been named as the rider of the series accepted it and Victoria would also have to find a home for the John "Tiny" Nicholls rose bowl, which was inaugurated in 1982 when the winners were Victorians, Matthew Anderson, Andrew Hofer, Wayne McCarney and Dean Woods.

Masters: Divisional champions decided

To say Laurie Noonan worked hard at the 2005 National Masters Track Championships is understating the obvious.

The popular cycling detective won three gold medals in division four which was just reward for his hard work on the track, the feat bringing him the track championship jersey for Masters 4 competition. But he did not reserve his energy only to produce results. He was equally as active off the track as a member of the organising committee for these highly successful championships.

As well as being on the podium to receive his medals he was also part of the presentation party, bestowing medallions and championship jerseys to fellow champions and place getters. Noonan had a golden day. He successfully defended his sprint and scratch race championships but the end result belied how he felt before competition.

"I woke up about six o'clock and felt shocking," he said. "I hopped on the ergo and did a bit and felt better. I don't know what it was, nerves perhaps. "After I warmed up on the track I then thought it mightn't be such a bad day after all and thankfully that is how it turned out."

To round out his great day Noonan combined with Mark Nelson and David James to form Hogan's Heroes and take the bronze medal in the teams sprint.

The gold medal went to the appropriately named Greed for Speed which comprised Peter Barnard, David Willmott and Grant Law with Parker's Pansies _ Leon Sims, Paul Parker and Richie Bates _ taking silver.

Noonan's golden haul started with the sprint where he beat popular Broncos CC all rounder Gerard O'Connell with the bronze medal also going to Queensland through Arch Davis (Gold Coast Gold Stars) who was taken to three heats by Victorian Brian Holden (Carnegie-Caulfield).

In Masters 2, Paul Dalton from Bendigo won the gold medal in straight heats from fellow Victorian James Spanswick but Alan Townsend (Parramatta) prevented a Big V clean sweep when he downed Dean Taylor (Ballarat).

Peter Barnard showed why he was the divisional champion in Masters 3 with a straight heat blitz in the sprint gold ride-off, with Richie Bates having a silver medal to take back to Cairns.

Grant Law (Illawarra), the father of Scott Law who has medalled three times in under 15 championship events, took the bronze, beating Laurence Gates (Chelsea).

David Willmott (St George) emphatically won the Masters 5 sprint title, in straight heats against James Gray (Waratah Veterans) and setting a new world best in competition in the second heat with an amazing 11.781sec.

Thomas Huberts (St Kilda) kept the bronze medal in Victoria when he downed Queenslander Paul Wroe (Maryborough).

Ron Boyle came from a seemingly hopeless position on the top bend to take out the Masters 5 sprint derby final. The Montreal Olympian won from Ken Crawford (Mackay) and Leon Sims (Carnegie).

Waratah Veterans' representative, Graham McClymont held off Keith Oliver (Parramatta) for a NSW quinella in the Masters 7 derby with the bronze going to Michael Goldie (Carnegie).

The win also sealed the Masters 7 championship jersey for McClymont.

Martin Peeters (Carnegie) continued on his winning way in Masters 8, taking the derby ahead of Ron Grant (Gold Coast Gold Stars) and Neil Wray (Chelsea).

And anything Peeters could do, so could Ron Truman (CATS) who notched his third gold medal of the meet when he beat Des Kidd (Dulwich Hill) and former Queensland police officer, Max Read who now rides with Carnegie.

Tabatha Cole notched something of an upset win when the Blackburn representative downed Queenslander Julie Barnett in women's Masters 2-3 sprint gold medal ride-off with Michelle Crawford (Goulburn) taking bronze ahead of Sonya Keay (Hamilton-Pine Rivers Wheelers).

A win in the other women's division sealed the championship jersey for Tanya Bosch (Sydney CC) who beat Sandra Beaumont (Southern Highlands) and Sharlene Smith (Logan) City.

Scratch Races

Winning the Masters 2 10km scratch race was enough to give Jayson Austin the championship jersey for the division. In a tactical race where the pursuit champion surged throughout the 40 laps Austin had control of proceedings for most of the event and he went on to take gold ahead of Matthew Smith (Ballarat) and Western Australian David James (Midland).

Peter Barnard and Grant Law provided a NSW quinella when they headed the field at the end of 10km in Masters 3, the bronze medal going to Dean Stewart (Northcote) the son of the legendary JJ Stewart capping off a successful comeback season.

The attrition rate was high in the Masters 4 10km with Laurie Noonan withstanding the surging tactics adopted by endurance duo Peter Verhoven (Parramatta) and Chris Hunt (Warragul).

Noonan maintained his composure and tempo and went out the bell to notch his third medal of the series in the fastest time of the 40-lap races of 12:53.72, former pursuit champion Verhoven taking silver and Hunt, a former one-hour record holder, the bronze.

Chelsea's Kurt Jensen lowered David Willmott's colours in the Masters 5 5km scratch race title, tasking gold ahead his NSW opponent and Brian Newman (Parramatta) taking the bronze medal.

Leon Sims (Carnegie) had to be content with the bronze medal in the Masters 6 5km championship but he collected enough points to take the division's championship jersey, just ahead of Ron Boyle who took gold and Ken Crawford the silver.

It was a long wait but many times Australian champion, Keith Oliver eventually broke through to win the gold medal in the Masters 7 scratch race. A jubilant Oliver punched the air in triumph as he crossed the line ahead of Waratah Veterans pair, David South and Hugh Gray to make it a NSW trifecta.

Martin Peeters made it four gold medals when he won the Masters 8 scratch race title ahead of Neil Wray and Ron Grant with Ron Truman making a clean sweep of Masters 9 events when he headed home Des Kidd and Max Read after 20 laps.

Julie Barnett's win in the Women's Masters 2-3 5km scratch race championship had more significance than the gold medal and title. It gained her enough points to draw level with Tabatha Cole and by virtue of more wins (2) she took the divisional championship ahead.

By taking the silver medal Michelle Crawford thwarted Cole of a vital championship aggregate point, the Blackburn rider having to settle for the bronze medal.

It was a matter of rounding up the usual suspects when it came to medal presentation time in the other women's division with Tanya Bosch (gold), Sandra Beaumont (silver) and Sharlene Smith (bronze), sharing the spoils.
