Penn State Lehigh Valley rider takes Chariot Crown

By Jacob Burns

The Chamber Chariot Races kicked off Friday, July 17 at the Lehigh Valley Velodrome with several breaks in the racing for rain. However, a full night of racing action still played out with Veronica Martinez (Coach Argentina), Rebecca McClintock (Colavita Bolla), Andy Lakatosh (PSU/ Tri-State Velo), and Jame Carney (Northwestern Mortgage) taking wins on the evening.

The main event for the evening, the men's Chariot Final, resulted in a well-deserved win for Andy Lakatosh (PSU/ Tri-State Velo), who also won all of his Chariot Heats throughout the night. Lakatosh took the win away from Keith Thorarinson (Independent), who was right on his tail. On the women's side in the Chariot Final Becky Conzelman (Frisco Cycling Club) pulled way ahead of the field to take first place away from her competitors. Jamie Pettinato (Radical Media) battled Veronica Martinez (Coach Argentina) and came out in second, while Martinez was forced to settle for a third place finish.

Other men's events for the evening included a 50-lap points race and miss and out. The Men's Miss-and-Out was Jame Carney's race. The Northwestern Mortgage rider played the devil and picked off competitors one by one before going on to take the win over Bobby Lea (T.E.A.M. Fuji) and Ryan Oelkers (T.E.A.M. Fuji). In the 50-lap points race Jame Carney and Mike Friedman (PSU) battled throughout. In the end Carney took the double win on the evening with Friedman second and Erik Saunders (Ofoto Lombardi Sports) third.

The remaining women's events for the evening included a miss-and-out and 15-lap final. Veronica Martinez of Coach Argentina's cycling team swept the miss and out, speeding past both Ashley Kimmet (Colavita Bolla) and Becky Conzelman (Frisco Cycling Club). The 15-Lap Final proved to be a great race for Rebecca McClintock (Colavita Bolla), who took a strong lead and held it for 12 laps to take most of the primes and the win.

The junior under-16 riders also had their chance to show their up and coming talent during the evening in a series of races for different levels of competitors. Winners for the evening included double winner Rodney Santiago (Puerto Rican National Cycling Team), Mike Roach (Vortex Cycling), Jamie Alvord (Tri-State Velo), and Matt Baranoski.
