Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Junior World Championships - CM JrCape Town, South Africa, July 12-16, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Day Next Day Day 3 - July 14: Men 1000m TT, men points race, women sprint qualifiers, women team pursuit,Bastille glory for FranceDay three of the UCI Junior World Cycling Championships saw some exciting racing at the Bellville Velodrome. The Sprint competition began in earnest today for the women as they began the battle for the prestigious sprint title. German rider, Kristina Vogel, was considered the rider to beat but only managed to qualify third in the opening round. Russia's Victoria Baranova set the fastest qualifying time of 11"918 seconds and was the only rider to qualify under the 12-second mark. Tomorrow will see the Sprints come to a head with the finals being held in the afternoon. The Ladies Team Pursuit provided some close racing amongst the top four nations. The final was a show of dominance by the Australian trio of Ashlee Ankudinoff, Megan Dunn and Sarah Kent who recorded a time of 3'37"138. The Australians quickly established the lead and the New Zealand team were powerless to respond to the pace the Australians set. Belgium put in an inspired ride against the Russians to take the bronze medal. The surprise of the day came in the one-kilometre time trial for men. Obviously inspired by the storming of the Bastille, French rider Quentin Lafargue took the gold ahead of the Australian, Thomas Palmer, who was expected to repeat his gold medal ride from one year ago. Lafargue recorded a time of 1'03"860 for the timed kilometer ahead of the Australians Thomas Palmer and Scott Law. The highlight of the evening's racing was the points race for men over 25 kilometres. American prodigy Taylor Phinney and Australian, Luke Durbridge, were amongst the favourites to take the title. The Points Race got off to a blazing start with riders frantically trying to elude the peleton. Six riders managed to lap the field on two separate occasions. Amongst those riders were Belgian Tosh van der Sande, New Zealander Jason Christie, Chilean Cristobal Olavarria and pre-race favourite Luke Durbridge. Taylor Phinney was unable make a successful breakaway due to being too well marked by the other competitors. Van der Sande rode very consistently throughout the race and reaped the benefits of his hard work by winning the gold with 49 points ahead of second placed rider, Cristobal Olavarria on 46 points and Australian Luke Durbridge taking bronze with 45 points. The racing resumes tomorrow at 14:30 at the Bellville Velodrome with the first rounds of the Men's Sprints and the finals of the Women's Sprints being the highlights of the day. Tuesday will also see the much anticipated Madison event for the men and if history is anything to go by this event will be sure to provide the crowd with some spectacular racing. Entrance is free. The track racing will continue tomorrow and Wednesday, the Time Trial takes place in Wellington on Friday, July 18 with the individual road race, through the streets of Cape Town on Sunday, July 20.
