Festival of Speed/Int'l Women's Challenge - NEUSA, July 18, 2008Aussies on top in PennsylvaniaWith large international fields for the Festival of Speed and International Women's Challenge consisting of some of the biggest names in the game, the weather was hot but the racing was even hotter. The night started off with a twist during the sprint heats as Jude Codrington of Trinidad and Tobago gave a huge effort in the final lap beating the number one qualifier Jason Niblett of the Australian national team. Unfortunately Codrington later crashed in the semi-final rounds and was unable to go on to the finals. During the 5km Dash for Cash, Australian Doug Repacholi who has proved to be one of the hardest hitting endurance rider this season, broke off the front for the majority of the race hanging on for the win with Jackie Simes just behind him. 2008 Olympian Bobby Lea displayed to the crowd why he is currently the fastest track endurance rider in the country with a big win in the 10 km scratch race. This was Lea's last night at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center before leaving for Beijing, China to compete at the Olympic Games. In the sprint finals it was Australian national sprint team member Scott Sunderland who proved to be the fastest man in the Festival of Speed. New Zealand's Simon VanVelthooven came in a close second to Sunderland with Stephane Cossette from Canada in third. For the women Australia's Laura McCaughey shut out the competition in the endurance events with two wins in the Super Sprint elimination event as well as the 10km International Women's Challenge. Liz Reap Carlson was hot on her trail with a photo finish at the line during the Super Sprint. However, when it came to sprinting, Aussie national team member Kaarle McCulloch was the woman to watch. McCulloch rode hard all night and took the number one spot in the women's Festival of Speed with USA rider Dana Feiss finishing in a very close second.
