Christie sets pursuit record in opening session

Ashburton's Jason Christie was the star of the first morning of the 2008 Lion Foundation New Zealand Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill today.

Christie (Mid South Canterbury) broke his own national record in the Junior Under 19 Men's 3000m Individual Pursuit by almost five seconds. He will race the final tonight with the chance to lower his record further.

Auckland's Justin Grace was fastest qualifier in the Elite Men's Sprint Qualifying followed by Southland's brilliant junior Edward Dawkins.

Christchurch's Natasha Hansen was the top qualifier in the women's sprint from fellow Cantabrian Jos Rastrick.

The key races this week where riders will be chasing key UCI qualifying points to earn a place in the upcoming world championships in Manchester include Marc Ryan in the men's individual pursuit, Alison Shanks in the women's individual pursuit – both on Wednesday evening – and Cathy Cheatley (Wanganui) in the women's points race on Friday evening.
