Day 2 - July 1:

Hayduk continues strong run on second night

By Andy Lee, USA Cycling Media

After breaking an 11-year-old national record and earning an automatic nomination to the U.S. junior world championship team in the 500-metre time trial on Saturday, Colleen Hayduk (Team Fuji-Salamander) collected her second national title of the weekend with a victory in the women's 17-18 sprint.

After earning the top seed with a 200-metre qualifying time of 12.273 seconds, Hayduk took two straight rides from Dana Feiss (Young Medalist Cycling) in the gold-medal final to claim another stars-and-stripes jersey. Hayduk's qualifying mark also earned her a second nomination to the team that will represent the United States at the UCI Junior Track World Championships in Mexico later this year. By eclipsing the world team time standard of 12.572 seconds and winning the sprint, Hayduk will also receive a nomination to compete in the sprint in addition to her 500-metre time trial nomination.

Shane Kline (Team Fuji-Salamander) also turned in a solid performance on Sunday, winning the men's 17-18 kilometre time trial with a time of 1:06.633 and beating the world team time standard of 1:07.888 to earn an automatic nomination to the U.S. National Team for the world championships. Kline edged David Espinoza (Herbal Life-Bike America), who clocked a 1:07.348 to earn the silver medal, while Ian Crane (Rad Racing NW) won the bronze medal with a time of 1:09.954.

In the men's 17-18 three-kilometre individual pursuit, Nik Reinert (Team Fuji-Salamander) captured his second national title of the weekend with a victory over JP LeClair (Adobe-Schwalbe). After earning the second seed in the morning qualifying session with a time of 3:46.040, Reinert shaved nearly seven seconds off his time in the head-to-head final against the top-seeded LeClair, clocking a winning time of 3:39.500. In the bronze medal final, Joey Rosskopf (Aarons-L5 Flyers) beat fourth-place finisher Joseph Kukolla (Nova-ISCorp).

Reinert's first stars-and-stripes jersey of the weekend came in Saturday night's points race. Although he won his second national title of the weekend, Reinert's time of 3:39.500 in the pursuit wasn't fast enough to earn an automatic nomination to the world championship team.

In the younger categories, several more events were contested that factor into the overall omnium standings. In the women's 10-12 one-kilometre scratch race final, Sarah Chen (Home Depot Center) rode to a victory and moved into the overall lead with only the two-kilometre scratch race remaining. Chen currently leads Tara McCormick (Lightning Velo) by two points, 12-10.

In the men's 10-12 one-kilometre scratch race, Calan Farley (Young Medalist Cycling) added a victory to his win in Saturday's 500-metre time trial to hold his lead in the omnium classification over Chris Baranoski (Cycle Sport Zaveta), 14-10.

In the junior women's 13-14 four-kilometre scratch race, Hannah Hayduk (Team Fuji-Salamander) took the victory and moved into the overall lead with a 10-9 advantage over Christine Barron (Home Depot Center).

Jesse Marans (Major Motion Cycling) added a men's 13-14 four-kilometre scratch race victory to his earlier win in the 500-metre time trial to take a commanding 14-5 lead into the final event of the omnium over Zachary Semian (Young Medalist Cycling).

In the junior women's 15-16 500-metre time trial, Coryn Rivera (Kahala La Grange) set a new national record with a time of 37.364 seconds, breaking Colleen Hayduk's previous mark of 37.470.

Alan Ting (Northwest Cycling Club) won the men's 15-16 500-metre time trial with a time of 34.680 seconds.

The 2007 USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships continue on Monday as four more national titles will be awarded in the 17-18 categories - the women's individual pursuit, the men's sprint, the madison and the women's keirin.
