Four champions crowned on opening night

Four national champions were crowned as the 2007 USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships kicked off at the 7-Eleven Velodrome tonight. Colleen Hayduk (Team Fuji-Salamander) earned the first national title of the evening by setting a new national record in the women's 17-18 500-metre time trial and earning an automatic nomination to represent the United States at the UCI Junior Track World Championships later this year in Mexico. Hayduk clocked a winning time of 36.656 seconds to best four other competitors and eclipse the junior world time standard of 38.847 seconds. Her mark also set a new national record for her age group, surpassing the old record of 37.280 previously held by Missy Thompson.
Behind Hayduk, Dana Feiss (Young Medalist Cycling) earned the silver medal with a time of 38.740, while Crystal Nunnemacher (JVR Sports) captured the bronze with a mark of 40.621.
In the men's 17-18 25-kilometre points race, Nik Reinert gave Team Fuji-Salamander its second national championship of the evening with a commanding 30-point victory over teammate Shane Kline. Reinert won five of the event's 12 intermediate sprints, scored points in two others and lapped the field once to collect 50 points and a stars-and-stripes jersey. With 20 points, Kline was a close second over bronze medalist Grant Boursaw (AMD-Discovery Channel). Kline won the 12th and final sprint as he and Reinert rode off the front of the main pack to cement his silver medal over Boursaw by just one point. Although Reinert won the competition, the average speed of 44.753 km/h. fell short of the 51.419 required to earn an automatic nomination to the world championship team.
In the men's keirin, Justin Williams (Team Rock) came out on top of a photo finish to earn the national title over Jim Lennon (TIAA-CREF-5280). After placing last in his opening round, Williams bounced back with a win in the ensuing repechage to earn a spot in the finals where he edged Lennon by a matter of inches with a late-race surge. David Engwis (Speedzone) placed third over keirin finalists Ben Barsi-Rhyne (AMD-Discovery Channel), Daniel Walker (Northwest Cycling Club) and Boursaw.
Whether or not Williams earns an automatic nomination to the world championship team with his victory in the keirin will be determined by his 200-metre sprint qualifying time on Monday. To qualify, Williams must post a time of 10.987 seconds or faster.
In the only other national championship category contested on the opening night of competition, Catherine Fiedler (Home Depot Center) won the women's 17-18 7.5-kilometre scratch race by out sprinting Hayduk and Lauren Shirock (BMX-Bianchi).
In addition to the internationally recognized junior category of 17-18-year-old riders, several younger divisions also began their quest for national titles. Competing in the first of several events that will be factored into the calculations for an overall title, athletes between the ages of 10 and 14 competed in the 500-metre time trial.
In the women's 10-12 race against the clock, Tara McCormick (Lighting Velo) clocked a time of 41.503 seconds to win the event and move into the early lead in the omnium-style competition that also includes one- and two-kilometre scratch races.
In the men's 10-12 500-metre time trial, Calan Farley (Young Medalist Cycling) won with a time of 40.277 seconds to move into first place in the overall omnium standings.
Christine Barron (Home Depot Center) turned in a time of 40.022 seconds to claim the victory in the women's 13-14 500-metre time trial. With the early lead in the three-event omnium, Barron will next contest the four-kilometre scratch race and eight-kilometre points race.
In the men's 13-14 500-metre time trial, Jesse Marans (Major Motion Cycling) recorded a 37.679 to score the win and take the early lead in the overall standings which will also factor in a four-kilometre scratch race and a 10-kilometre points race.
The 2007 USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships continue on Sunday as national titles up for grabs include the junior men's 17-18 three-kilometre individual pursuit and kilometre time trial, as well as the junior women's 17-18 sprint.
