Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing - UCI codes
Queensland State Track Championships - NEChandler Velodrome, Brisbane, Australia, January 3-7, 2007Macpherson gold rush at Queensland Track ChampionshipsBy John Michael Flynn at Chandler Velodrome, Brisbane The understudy to the Meares sisters, former world junior keirin champion Chloe Macpherson showed another glimpse of her potential this week, with a rush of gold at the Queensland Track Cycling Championships Macpherson kicked off the week with a gold medal performance in the 500 metre time trial - a largely expected result, given her mentor Anna Meares was being rested from her home championship. There was tougher opposition for the former multiple world junior BMX champion, up against Rockhampton's emerging star, Philippa Hindmarsh, in the final of the women's sprint. Again, it was gold to Macpherson, with Hindmarsh, a first year under 19, claiming silver in open company. Capping off the week, the Mackay talent produced two gold medal performances last night, winning her pet event, the keirin, then backing up to snare gold in the women's scratch race. The scratch race performance was arguably Macpherson's best for the championship. Competing against Queensland Academy of Sport team-mate Hayley Wright, Macpherson had to find something in the finishing straight, after Wright launched her sprint early. "I was waiting until basically the last moment," Macpherson told Cyclingnews. "I wasn't aware that Haley was going to go so early. Sasha (Harvey) was the one mostly putting on the speed." Macpherson leaves Brisbane today for a training camp in Adelaide with the A.I.S. Her immediate goal, to be in peak shape for the National Championships in Sydney, after last year winning her first National Track Championship gold medal in the women's team sprint with Kerrie Meares. "Hopefully get a bit of base fitness before February for nationals," Macpherson said. "Anna (Meares) is raising the bar, but I think it's better to have her raising the bar in our home country and to race against the Olympic, world record holder in our own country without having to go overseas. "I still have a bit to go before I can properly match it with the seniors, I'm hopeful that I can step it up another level at the Nationals." Hindmarsh impresses Hailing from the same club as the famous Meares sisters, Rockhampton's Philippa Hindmarsh has also produced several impressive performances at the Queensland Track Championships. Stepping up from the juniors for the first time at the state titles, victory in the under 19 500 metre time trial was followed up with the silver behind Macpherson in the women's sprint. Last night two more gold medals came Hindmarsh's way, in the under 19 women's keirin and the under 19 women's scratch race. "It hasn't gone too bad actually," Hindmarsh told Cyclingnews. "It's good coming up to the senior ranks, it's great to race with Chloe (Macpherson) and Haley (Wright). A product of the Rockhampton talent factory, under the direction of master coach Ken Tucker Snr, Hindmarsh's goal for 2007 is to make the team for the World Championships in Bordeaux. "Every time I come off the track, he's (Tucker) got something I've got to improve on," Hindmarsh said. "I'd love to just make it to World's. If I'm able to get into the team that would be my main goal." More Rockhampton spoils for Edwards The powerful Rockhampton Cycling Club also had reason to celebrate with a classy ride from Josh Edwards in the Under 19 men's scratch race. Up against a field including World Championship team sprint bronze medalist Byron Davis, Edwards knew his only option was to break away from the pack - a feat he managed to accomplish after launching several leg sapping attacks. "It's always good to get an individual win in front of the sprinters," the hard toiling Edwards said. "We decided there was a few sprinters, we didn't want to be there with them at the finish." Davis showed plenty of kick to almost catch Edwards in the final lap. His eventual Silver in the scratch race coming on the back of a victory in the Under 19 men's sprint and silver in the team sprint - enough to suggest Davis will be a serious gold medal chance at the National Championships, especially with his good mate Scott Sunderland moving up to the senior ranks. The Kangaroo Point club cyclist is also due to race at the Youth Olympics, ahead of the National Championships. "Last night (sprint) was a bit of a hit-out, not much competition here," Davis said. "Qualified first (flying) 200, won the sprint. Scott Sunderland, Dan Ellis, won't be racing nationals this year. Sure there will be new challengers, but I'm definitely going for gold, that's the focus." "Roadie" George wins kilo and features in scratch race Another standout at the 2007 Queensland Track Championships has been Ipswich cyclist Steve George, a rider classed as a 'trackie' amoung road cyclists and a 'roadie' among track cyclists. With the likes of Miles Olman and Grant Irwin unavailable for their home championship, George took full advantage - winning the kilo and backing up with another solid performance in the scratch race. George tried several times to 'wack' his opposition, driving on the front in the Open Men's scratch race. The bunch was all together with just over a lap to go, when George launches another - not so surprising - attack. "I had in my mind if it came down to two laps to go and it was all together I'd give it a crack for the last five hundred," George told Cyclingnews. "I was in a bad position to kick off because everyone was watching me, I still got high and snuck a bit of a break, but couldn't quite hang onto it in the end." Rockhampton speedsters Jeremy Hogg and Lindsay McMaster emerged in the home straight for a thrilling finale. A semi-airborne Hogg took the spoils on the line - with McMaster initially placed second, before being relegated after commissaries ruled he'd spent too long on the duck boards. "I had to throw it pretty hard, had to give it a pretty big throw just in case," Hogg said post-race. "Race plan was not to do any work at all." Another Rockhampton cyclist, Jay Callaghan was awarded the bronze, after a lengthy post race adjudication. Tandem talents - world class One of the big stories to emerge from the Queensland Track Cycling Championships is the continued improvement of the state's AWD (athletes with disabilities) tandem cyclists. It's a story of inspiration, hard luck and gutsy comebacks and at the centre of it is four inspiring young men - Bryce Lindores, Stephen Storer, Ben Macfie and Ben Holmes. Backed by the Victor Broncos club, Macfie and Holmes broke through on the national scene last year, producing what many well qualified judges rated as the performance of the championships, when they won gold in the tandem sprint at last year's Australian Track Championships in Adelaide. There was an unfortunate post-script to the story. Macfie and Holmes were in the final stages of preparation for the World Championships, when they crashed in training at the Chandler Velodrome. Macfie, the powerful stoker, who has already endured enough hardships in life, hit the deck hard, fracturing his skull. Doctors ruled he couldn't fly to the World Championships in Belgium .. and as they say .. that was that. But nothing would stop the two articulate young men from renewing their partnership on the track at the Queensland Championships, where they bettered their times from 2006 at the same meet. "I knew that coming back from close to four months straight without any training, with the injuries I sustained due to the accident would be tough," Macfie told Cyclingnews. "I'm very pleased, going to see more to come. Seeing the other fellas who went overseas, seeing what they did, more and more motivation to stick on their tail." What other fellas? Those "other fellas" Macfie and Holmes refer to are the pairing of Stephen Storer and Bryce Lindores - also from the Victor Broncos Club - who emerged from the shadow of the more fancied pairing to win bronze in the tandem at the World Championships in Belgium. Lindores, who like Macfie is almost a made to order custom built stoker, was inspired to get involved in cycling by his Gold Coast neighbour Robbie McEwen. Together with former Cairns product Storer ( a classy cyclist in his own right) , the pair have formed a formidable combination, showing their wares once again with gold in the time trial and sprint at this week's State Titles. It's no surprise what the boys want next. The same prize Ben Holmes and Ben Macfie are chasing. "It's come from nothing and made something of it and come good in the world's and got a bronze," and enthusiastic Brycey told Cyclingnews. "It's all good, but we're not stopping at the bronze." Storer, the calming influence of the pairing, sees the secret of future success, being in the enjoyment. "Have fun as we go, without the fun, the motivation can't stay," Storer said. The building rivalry with Holmes and Macfie is another reason to keep training hard. "It pushes us to keep a step in front of them, they're very talented too which keeps us on our toes, without competition we can't get any better." The tandem talents from the Victor Broncos Club are now planning another Australian sporting dynasty - a Thorpe/Hackett style rivalry which will propel both to the top of the World Championship podium on the boards in Bordeaux. "I truly believe that Australia's going to be on top in the tandem cycling in the next few years, 1-2-3 I reckon, we're going to be the best, all of us," an emphatic Ben Holmes told Cyclingnews. His stoker sees it much the same way. "We've discussed it with head coaches here in Australia, if you look at the situation with Ryan Bailey in Athens, there were four or five guys pushing each other," Macfie said. "We've got four or five really strong pairings." The tandems will be on show at the Australian Track Championships at Sydney's Dunc Gray Velodrome next month.
