Gray the greatest in Renmark

Mild temperatures and light winds greeted Riverland Cycling Club members on Sunday for the first track race meet of the year.

Mick Gray, Bob Pankhurst and Amanda Steele maintained a steady pace around the 500m track in the 20-lap heartstarter event. Gray started the sprint from the 200m mark, and despite a concerted effort by Steele, Gray went on to win with Pankhurst claiming a close 2nd.

Gray powered past half of his competitors like a freight train in the main event, the 1500m handicap, with Josh Steele and Angelo Ylia the only ones to jump on board before he crossed the finish line.

The 2500m handicap was a re-run of the 1500m, with Gray again dominant, despite a determined surge by Ylia.

The crowd favourite, the Miss 'n Out race, was a nailbiter, with Josh Steele blowing his chance of a placing with a lack of concentration. Ylia snuck past Steele and went on to claim 3rd, with Gray and Pankhurst taking out the double.

Pankhurst returned to his brilliant self in the A-Grade scratch race, mastering his timing in the sprint to claim 1st, with Gray hot on his heels for 2nd.

New track enthusiast Wayne Woosnan dug deep and nudged out track veteran John Eshman and a focused Glen O'Brien in the B-Grade scratch race, notching up his first win of the year.
