Men's Madison

A near capacity crowd was treated to a typical six-day style Madison final at Manchester this afternoon. The first move of the race from Sergiy Laghkuti and Mykhai Radionov of Arda Natura Pinarello Ukraina quickly gained a lap in the early stages. However, it proved to be too much too soon as a fast moving bunch promptly dropped them and the pair lost their initial gains almost immediately.
The team to beat throughout the first half of the race was the Great Britain duo of Rob Hayles and Geraint Thomas who took an early lead in the points but were unable to register a decisive attack and escape the bunch.
With 55 laps remaining, the Dutch pairing of Peter Schep and Jens Mouris attacked and very quickly got the lap that was to prove decisive. Hayles and Thomas continued to dominate the sprints but despite two blistering solo attacks that took them beyond sight of the bunch, the British pair just didn't have the legs to keep it going and eventually settled for consolidating their silver medal position over Nikolai Trussov and Serguei Klimov of Russia.
The young British team of Jonathan Bellis and Ben Swift riding for their UCI trade team '100% Me' scored well throughout the race and took the final sprint to claim fourth.
What could have been a positive result for the US team of Bobby Lea and Charles Bradley Huff was ruined by two consecutive problems with Huff's bike midway through the race, forcing Lea to ride on his own for extended periods. This prevented Lea from contesting any of the sprints and led eventually to them losing a lap and dropping out of contention.
Women's scratch
A serious crash just before the bell marred an exciting women's scratch race final. Mie Bekker Lacota (Denmark) put in an attack almost from the gun and managed to stay away for several laps, but without help she was unable to get the lap she wanted.
Soon after Bekker was caught, a powerful attack came off the front from points race silver medallist Belinda Goss (Australia), she was quickly joined by eight others including China's Jianling Wang and Britons Elizabeth Armitstead and Kate Cullen (racing in Recycling.co.uk colours). The group of nine worked well together and quickly caught the other fifteen riders, effectively eliminating them from the race.
Coming around the final bend on the approach to the bell, a touch of wheels in the middle of the pack brought down at least half a dozen riders as they positioned themselves for the final sprint. Some riders took a long time to get up, and Christy King of the United States was taken away on a stretcher. Goss - who's no doubt improved her chances of World Championship selection this weekend - led out the sprint in the final lap, but had to settle for a second silver medal as Wang of China powered around the outside to take the victory. A mass sprint behind them saw Yumari Gonzalez Valdinieso of Cuba best of the rest to take bronze.
Women's keirin
Victoria Pendleton signed off a perfect weekend with an emphatic and dominant display of keirin sprinting surely marking her as the woman to beat in all the power events in Majorca next month.
The final saw plenty of switching for position behind the derny, and as it peeled off World Cup leader Shuang Guo of China took to the front and looked to have made the right move. At the bell however, a rampant Pendleton charged around the outside of Guo in an awesome display of power bringing Russian Osanka Grishina with her. Guo was swamped as the two riders swept past but managed to hang on for the bronze medal and her World Cup lead.
In the minor final, Anna Blyth looked to have victory assured as she powered around the final bend with daylight between her and the rest, but a strong recovery by Australian Kristine Bayley took her alongside Blyth and she just managed to overhaul the Briton on the line taking victory by around half a wheel.
Men's team sprint

As expected, the Great Britain team of Craig MacLean, Ross Edgar and Chris Hoy were virtually untouchable in the men's team sprint, posting the only sub 45-second times in both qualifying and the final.
The last qualification heat featuring Great Britain and the German team of Matthias John, Maximilian Levy and Michael Seidenbacher produced the two fastest times although it may have been different but for the disqualification of the Science in Sport team of Jamie Staff, Jason Kenny and Matthew Crampton.
In their first qualifying attempt, both Crampton and Kenny went before the gun, but in a more controversial second start, Kenny seemed to try to go early but was held back by the starter causing his back wheel to slip around. By the time he was ready to go Kenny's feet were in the wrong position to get his gear turning he had to lay his bike down on the track. Science in Sport's opponents Japan were allowed to ride again and finished in fifth.
Both medal races went the way of the qualification times. The Great Britain team couldn't quite match their qualifying effort but the margin of victory was just as emphatic with their average speed topping 61 km/h for the three laps, surely making them favourites for the World Championships.
After the first half lap, the British team were marginally behind but soon overhauled the deficit and pulled out a two tenths lead by 250m. The lead continued to build steadily during Edgar's leg and a seemingly invincible Chris Hoy finished them off with a final lap of under thirteen and a half seconds to beat the Germans by nearly a second.
An all Australian bronze medal match pitched the Australian national team of Daniel Ellis, Mark French and Joel Leonard against the SouthAustralia.com/AIS trio of Shane Perkins, Scott Sunderland and Ryan Bayley. For two laps it looked as though the National team might reverse the qualification result and pip their compatriots to the medal, but a fast last lap from Olympic champion Ryan Bayley hauled back the AIS squad by less than a tenth of a second.
JKA international keirin

Chris Hoy's near perfect weekend - only defeat in yesterday's sprint final by Arnaud Tournant has blotted his result sheet - ended with the Great Britain rider taking the big cash prize in the Japanese Keirin Association's international keirin, the final event of this year's Manchester World Cup.
Hoy took the front in both the semi-final and final using the stamina that makes him such a force in the kilometre to prevent anyone from coming past him. In the final round, Hoy got himself to the front behind the derny, but left a gap that team mate Ross Edgar edged in to. In the next few hundred metres the pair of them exchanged places leaving Hoy a clear track when the derny pulled over, and as soon as it did he unleashed his sprint which no one was able to respond to.
Edgar, in second wheel was unable to prevent a fast finishing Teun Mulder (Netherlands) from coming past him in the final metres, but the result was all about Hoy as he took victory several lengths ahead of the Dutchman.
The semi-final rounds were soured slightly by a crash on the final bend before the bell when Gregory Bauge's rear tyre blew at speed. Thankfully no-one else was taken down, as Edgar took the sprint from Mulder, but Bauge stayed on the floor for sometime before limping off. He was unable to start the final for 7th - 12th places.
