Hammer, Reed each score second national titles
Massie claims first-career sprint title, TIAA-CREF wins team pursuit

The 2006 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships continued Friday night as both Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif./Ouch) and Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash./Spike) each rode to their second national title of the week. After setting a new national record in the women's three-kilometre individual pursuit Wednesday, Hammer took a convincing win in the 25-kilometre points race while Reed added a women's 500-metre time trial title to her sprint jersey.
Giddeon Massie (Colorado Springs, Colo./Spike) also captured his first-career men's sprint title and the TIAA-CREF foursome of Mike Creed (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Mike Friedman (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Will Frischkorn (Boulder, Colo.) and Brad Huff (Fair Grove, Mo.) bested a five-team field in the men's team pursuit in the other two national championship events Friday.
The defending national champion in the 500-metre time trial, Reed clocked a winning time of 36.58 seconds to beat silver medalist Liz Carlson (Jim Thorpe, Pa./East Coast Velo) by nearly half a second. The win meant Reed successfully defended two of her three titles from 2005 with Saturday's keirin still remaining. Reed and Carlson were the only two riders to crack the 37-second barrier as Anna Lang (La Jolla, Calif./Big City Velo), Martha Dunne (Coronado, Calif./Jelly Belly) and Shelby Allen (Cerritos, Calif./Major Motion) took the final three podium spots from the 29-rider field.
Erica Allar (Fogelsville, Pa./Team Fuji-Salamander), 20, placed seventh overall with a time of 38.971 seconds to capture the U23 national title.

Like Reed, Hammer duplicated two of her victories from a year ago after adding another points race crown to her rapidly growing list of wins. Hammer lapped the balance of the 20-rider field once and won the last four intermediate sprints to score 40 points. Rebecca Quinn (Quakertown, Pa.) rode a solid race to place second, scoring points in all but one of the eight intermediate sprints to finish with 22 points. Recent USA Cycling Elite National Criterium Champion, Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Cedar Springs, Mich./Verducci-Breakaway), started strong and rode consistently throughout the 25-kilometre race, winning the first intermediate sprint and scoring points in five others to place third with 13 points. Cassandra Holman (Whittier, Calif./The Home Depot Center) and Kelly Benjamin (Overland Park, Kan./Cheerwine) completed the podium in fourth and fifth respectively with eight and five points.
Hammer will also compete for her third national title of the week Saturday in the women's scratch race.
Natalie Klemko (Bristol, Wis./America's Dairyland) 19, won the U23 classification, placing 12th overall after scoring one point in the penultimate intermediate sprint.
The men's sprint featured arguably the deepest field of any event at this year's national championships as Massie took home his first stars-and-stripes jersey in the head-to-head sprint discipline. In the final, Massie squared off against his 2004 Olympic Games team sprint teammate Adam Duvendeck (Santa Barbara, Calif./Echelon Santa Barbara), who opened the 2006 national championships with a win in the keirin.
In the morning's 200-metre qualifying session, Duvendeck earned the top seed, clocking a time of 10.773 seconds while Massie posted a 10.871 to claim the second seed.

In the round of 24, Massie dispatched Kelyn Akuna (San Jose, Calif./Easton-Specialized) before ousting reigning junior sprint national champion Justin Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Major Motion) in the 1/8 finals and Thursday's kilometre time trial winner Stephen Hill (Winston, Ga./East Point Track Club) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Massie took two straight wins in the best-of-three format from Spike teammate Ben Barczewski (Breiginsville, Pa.) to advance to the finals.
Duvendeck's path to the finals included a win against Kevinn Matthews (Tulsa, Ok./PowerBar-Elitea) in the round of 24, a victory over Dean Tracy (Portland, Ore./Rubicon) in the 1/8 finals and a win over Kevin Selker (Boulder, Colo./Spike) in the quarterfinals before beating Michael Blatchford (Cypress, Calif./Spike) in the semifinals.
In the ensuing finals, Massie jumped to a 1-0 lead with a win in the first heat, but Duvendeck evened the score with a win in the second heat before Massie claimed the third and final heat to claim the national title.
The 20-year-old Blatchford earned the U23 title, placing third after taking two consecutive wins in the small final over Barczewski.
Selker rounded out the podium in fifth after winning the 5-8 final over Ryan Nelman (Taylor Lake Village, Texas/CKR Racing), Zachary Copeland (Vancouver, Wash.) and Hill.
The 2006 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships conclude Saturday with finals in the men's and women's team sprint, the women's keirin, the women's scratch race and the madison.
