Oceania Track Championships - CCMelbourne, Australia, November 23-26, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Day Next Day Day 2 - November 24French dominates men's sprint; Spratt, Downing, and Bayley collect women's event winsBy Amy McCann In the morning session, Mark French continued his blistering form from yesterday's flying 200m, easily winning through to the Men's Sprint Final. Defeating Adam Stewart (NZ) and Scott Sunderland (WA) in the first two rounds, he then easily defeated Daniel Ellis (ACT) in the quarter-finals and Shane Perkins (Carnegie) in the semi-finals. French's powerful bursts in the back straight were far too strong for every opponent; French made it through the day winning every sprint race. Jason Niblett defeated Neil Campbell in the quarter-finals and Travis Smith in the semi-finals. In the afternoon session, French defeated Niblett. In a clash of former junior world champions, the Joe Ciavola Velodrome was set alight with a furious pace, and it was the powerful legs of French that won him the title. Perkins easily won his heat to take third over New Zealand's Travis Smith. Women's points raceAmanda Spratt (NSW) has claimed the Oceania women's points race title, narrowly defeating New Zealand's Catherine Cheatley in a final lap sprint. Belinda Goss (TAS) took the bronze. Women's scratch raceVictorian Cyclist of the Year Tess Downing (Carnegie Caulfield) won the women's scratch race by half a bike ahead of Tasmanian Belinda Goss (TAS). Tess, a six-time Australian Champion in 2005-2006, rode a flawless bike race in front of a strong parochial home crowd which saved the loudest cheer of the event so far for their favourite local girl. Junior men's points raceRising young star Leigh Howard (Geelong CC) claimed another major title with his win in the junior men's point race. Leigh outclassed his opponents in a tactical bike race, claiming the championships with 41 points, 13 points ahead of James Langedyk (Geelong CC) who pipped Thomas Palmer (ACT) by one point. Women's 500m TTKristine Bayley (WA) continued the form which saw her take the women's 500m time trial at the 2006 Australian Championships earlier this year, claiming the title ahead of 2002 Commonwealth Game gold medallist Kerrie Meares (QLD). 2006 world junior team representative Kaarle McCulloch (NSW) was third. Junior women's sprintQueensland's Phillippa Hindmarsh defeated Chloe Hoskings (ACT) in two rides in the junior women's sprint final. Esther Pugh-Uren (Bendigo CC) claimed bronze ahead of Netasha Pearse (NSW). Junior women's 2000m individual pursuitIt was a cross-Tasman affair in the junior women's 2000m individual pursuit, with both rides featuring a clash of Aussie and New Zealand riders. Courtney Le Lay (QLD) defeated Cathy Jordan (NZ) in the ride off for gold and silver, whilst Bendigo's Lauren Hooper bettered her personal best by eight seconds to claim bronze ahead of Phillip Swain (NZ).
