Oceania Track Championships - CCMelbourne, Australia, November 23-26, 2006Day 1 - November 23Mark French sets Joe Ciavola velodrome alightJamieson and Mactier qualify fastest in individual pursuitBy Amy McCann In a blistering ride, Mark French (St Kilda CC) rode a 10.168 to qualify almost a third of a second faster than his nearest opponent in the men's sprint qualifying at Joe Ciavola velodrome. Travis Smith of Canada was second fastest in a time of 10.461, with Jason Niblett (Horsham CC) in third with 10.472. Cam McKinnon from Canada was 5th in 10.496 just ahead of Shane Perkins (Carnegie CC) in 10.544 with Malaysian Josiah NG 6th in 10.560. The finals of the men's sprint continue on Friday. In the junior men's sprint qualifying, Byron Davis (QLD) was the quickest around the Joe Ciavola velodrome with a 10.831 ahead of Edward Dawkins of New Zealand and Mark Glowacki (SA). In the junior women's qualifying, Phillippa Hindmarsh (QLD) was fastest in 12.349. In the women's sprint qualifying, Kristine Bayley (WA) and Kaarle McCulloch (NSW) rode under 12 seconds to edge Kerrie Meares into 3rd place. Kristine clocking 11.821 ahead of Kaarle's 11.950 and Kerrie's 12.017. The women's sprint finals continue Saturday. World champion Mark Jamieson (TAS) qualified fastest in the men's individual pursuit with a time of 4:26.110 just ahead of NSW's Philip Thuax in 4:27.780. The leading two were over 12 seconds ahead of Hayden Josefski (QLD) in third. The final is at DISC on Saturday morning. 2005 world champion Katie Mactier (Carnegie CC) rode a conservative 3:39.220 to just pip Alison Shanks of New Zealand who recorded a time of 3:40.510 in qualifying for the women's individual pursuit. Amanda Spratt (QLD) was third in 3:46.000. Finals will be held at Vodafone on Saturday night. Leigh Howard (Geelong CC) rode a 3:22.880 in the junior men's 3000m individual pursuit, just ahead of Jack Bobridge's (SA) 3:23.340 and James Langedyk's (Geelong CC) 3:25.440. Ricky Peoples (Shepparton) was 4th in 3:29.220. Courtney Le Lay (QLD) was fastest in the junior women's 2000m individual pursuit with a time of 2:39.100. Mark French continued where he left off in the men's sprint qualifying to record the fastest time in the team sprint with Jason Niblett and Daniel Ellis (ACT). They rode a 45.880 just ahead of Shane Perkins, Scott Sunderland and Joel Leonard in 45.925. The final is on Sunday morning.
