Decks by Design team, Ben Kersten and Gavin Bates, managed to defend their title on Sunday night winning the Ron Bates Memorial Madison for the second year in succession by the barest possible margin in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at the wonderful grounds of Hurstville Oval.

The powerful St. George team hit the front at the completion of the second of four sessions but were placed under enormous pressure by Warren Scott and Chris Sutton (Dynafurn team) in the third session of the race. Scott and Sutton broke clear of Kersten and Bates as well as two time winners Steve & Peter Fitzpatrick (Kareela Tool and Die) and were the first to gain a lap on the field and take the race lead.

But the Fitzpatrick brothers, Kersten and Bates clawed their way back to also gain a lap on the field and be in major contention for first place. There was nothing in the race until the penultimate sprint when Kersten took the honours and five points to move four points clear of the Fitzpatrick brother and five points clear of Sutton and Scott.

In the final sprint Sutton and Scott claimed the five points ahead of Fitzpatrick brothers and Kersten/Bates to finish just two points behind the winning combination and one point ahead of the Fitzpatrick brothers. Kersten has had a busy week winning the World Cup 1 kilometre time trial in Los Angeles by more than a second before flying home to claim the Bankstown wheel race on Saturday night and the NSW scratch race championship and then saddling up to win the Ron Bates Memorial.

Chris Sutton, despite not winning the madison, had some consolation in winning the opening derby ahead of Peter and Steven Fitzpatrick. Novacastrian Michael Lewis won the Sam Drew Memorial wheel race for the second year taking the prestigious event from Ben Isaksen of Lidcombe and Peter Fitzpatrick third. Richard Lang, Stuart Lane and Matt Pettit claimed the top three placings in the N grade derby while Brett McGinty defeated the fast finishing Simon Llewellyn and Neil Leifels in the C grade derby.

Kaarle McCulloch, after recording excellent times in state championships on the weekend and posting four victories over elite women cyclists will be heading to her first national championships in Adelaide next week. Kaarle won the derby sprint, two-lap handicap and scratch race, with Cassandra Kell and Skye-Lee Armstrong the major placegetters. Skye-Lee did, however, record a victory in the open miss and out with Brendan Fehon and Scott Mills finishing in the placings.

Mark Wall from Sutherland recorded his first win on the track, claiming victory in the open scratch ahead of Andrew Kilday and Simon Llewellyn. Peter Lewis from Hunter Districts was the star of the Under 17 programme, winning three of the four events and losing only the first race - an 8 lap derby - to Lawrence van Schie and Alex Carver. Van Schie was impressive in most events and managed to record three more placings while Callum Docker and Alex Carver recording minor placings.

Lachlan Morton was the star of the Under 15 programme, winning the opening derby and then scoring a half-lap win in the scratch race as well as second in the sprint to Liam Melville. Bradley Callaby, Jessie Griffiths and Evan Batkin gave St George a trifecta in the handicap while Jack Bennett, Adriano Maradini and Anthony Scott were prominent throughout the night. Jessica Griffiths also backed up to win a combined Under 15-13 women scratch.

Tirian McManus made it a one-way street in the Under 13's with four grand victories, including the handicap from scratch, with strong pedalling. Michael Docker finished second on three occasions and a third placing while Docker's Lidcombe team mate Scott Carver placed third in three races and second in the handicap.

The Under 11 racing was evenly raced all night with four different winners in the four races. India Short sprinted clear of Lara Batkin and Rubin Ingwersen to make another St George trifecta in the derby while Chris Weekes got up to win the Handicap from the scratch mark just ahead of front marker Dylan Ingwersen and middle marker Jade Reynolds. Lara Batkin defeated India Short and Peter Diniakos to make another trifecta for St George in the sprint and Ruben Ingwersen just managed to overpower Joel Fodera in the scratch race with Jade Reynolds picking up another well deserved third placing.
