Port Nicholson Poneke Cycling Club
Wellington, New Zealand, November 8, 2005
Opening night at the Wellington velodrome featured round 1 of the VIC Cycles distance
series and saw some strong competition. The Cat2 race was taken out by Jason McCarty
who proved too strong in the closing stages of the race while Sarah Butt and Gina
Waibl had their own private battle for honours in the Woman's classification.
Cat1 raced hard with Brady Gibbons showing some class early in the season but
couldn't catch Christian Wengler who launched himself off the front of the bunch
with three laps to go. Wengler managed to hang on for the win and pick up the
maximum 8 points to take the early lead in the VIC Cycles series. Next week features
Keirin racing and round 2 of the VIC Cycles series.
