Masters: Sprinters come out to play

Sprinters moved into the spotlight on the third day of competition in the 2005 National Masters Track championships at DISC and the record book has some new entries.

Peter Barnard who has dominated the short course events for Masters 3 added new world and national best times to the new world best he set in Wednesday's time trials. In qualifying for the sprint he went under his own Australian best (11.194sec) set in Sydney when he clocked 11.008 for the flying 200m.

The Southern Cross (NSW) star took his record breaking form into round one when his 11.236 became the new world best time for the flying 200m in competition.

Barnard, Grant Law (NSW), Ritchie Bates (Q) moved through to the semi-finals along with Laurie Gates (V) via the repechage round.

Alan Townsend (NSW) needed a win in the repechage round to join Victorians Paul Dalton, James Spanswick and Dean Taylor in the semis.

Queenslander, Gerard O'Connell (11.914) was the quickest qualifier in Masters 4 and he won through to the semis with the next two quickest, Laurie Noonan (V 12.085) and Brian Holden (V 12.594) with Arch Davis (Q) completing the quartet via the repechage.

Dave Willmott (NSW) was the top qualifier in Masters 5 with a sensational 11.846 and he breezed into the semi-finals.

But upsets prevailed in round one with Paul Wroe (Q) and James Gray (NSW) winning through as did Tom Huberts (V) via the repechage. Peter Ganss (ACT), clearly the second quickest in qualifying failed to make it through to the medal rounds.

Montreal Olympian, Ron Boyle (Q) and Jeff Smith (V) made it straight through to the Masters 6 final with Ken Crawford (Q) and Leon Sims (V) making it through the repechage round.

Keith Oliver had to come through the repechage to make the Masters 7 final where he will be up against Graham McClymont and Hugh Gray (NSW), Michael Goldie (V) and Colin Rossiter (WA).

Victorians Martin Peeters, Rod Hay and Neil Wray who went directly from round one while Queenslander Ron Grant made it via the repechage will contest the Masters 8 final.

The semi-finalists for the women's category one sprint are headed by time trial winner Julie Barnett who rode a 12.903 flying 200m followed by Tabatha Cole (V 13.171), Michelle Crawford (NSW 13.521) and Sonya Keay Q 13.806).

On the last day of competition, category one women and Masters men 2, 3, 4 and 5 will decide their medals with semi-finals finals.

Men's masters 6, 7 and 8 will contest derbies to decide the champions and medallists.

Juniors: Two perfect records

Victorian under 17 star Leigh Howard, Geelong Cycle Club, and explosive under 15 prospect Megan Dunn (NSW) emerged with unblemished records after the third day of competition at the 2005 Australian Junior Track Championships at Melbourne's new DISC velodrome. Howard took his fourth gold medal for the series with a straight heats in the sprints while Dunn made it three from three in under 15 competition.

For Howard the sprint medal goes with the titles he took earlier in the meet in the time trial and the teams and individual pursuit. Howard has successfully mixed short course and endurance events and he is still undecided in which area he will concentrate his future career. "I suppose I have been concentrating a little bit more on endurance but I still like the speed events," he said. When asked to name the success which gave him the greatest pleasure, it was still something of an each-way bet for the Geelong rider. "Beating Ben Kersten's Australian record for the flying 200m gave me a real buzz but then again winning the pursuits was pretty special too," he said.

He came in to these championships as the defending 2000m individual pursuit champion and he was largely responsible for Victoria's team pursuit success and atone for last year's loss to Western Australia in Launceston. Howard produced sizzling pace to win the sprint in straight heats against Byron Davis, arguably the most improved rider in this division in Australia. While little separated the finalists in their qualifying times the Queenslander had no answer to the Victorian who won the first heat in 11.777sec and was even quickest when he sealed the title in 11.670 (61.668km/h).

The bronze medal was decided in three heats between Lachlan Plane (Q) who was beaten in the semi-final by Howard and Tom Palmer (ACT). The Canberra rider won the first and crossed the ahead of Plane in the second but the placing's were reversed for not riding a straight line over the final 200m. Palmer took the medal in the decider.

In the lower age division Dunn has been equally impressive as Howard, and she too has an Australian record to go with her golden haul, setting a new national best in the 2000m individual pursuit. Dunn had earlier claimed the time trial and individual pursuit crowns.

Queenslander, Philippa Hindmarsh emerged as the new under 17 women's sprint champion With a straight heats win over Western Australian Josephine Tomic and her team mate Josephine Butler took the bronze in straight heats against Lisa Friend (V).

The under 15 men's competition is developing into a two man ward between Patrick Drapac (V) and Scott Law (NSW). Going into the sprints, each had a gold and silver medal, Law beating Drapac in the time trial on opening night and the Victorian squaring the ledger by winning the 2000m individual pursuit ahead of Law.

Drapac went into the gold medal ride off after straight heating Ivan Cook (Q) but Law was forced to a third heat by his NSW team mate Bryce Leskie. In the final Drapac opted to nullify Law's explosive kick by making it a straight-out three-lap speed derby and he took his second gold medal of the series with times of 12.899 and 13.144. Cook took the bronze medal ahead of Leskie with times, ironically, quicker the Drapac, 12.890 and 12.470.

The under 15 women's final was a NSW showdown between Megan Dunn, who progressed to the golden ride-off by beating Tasmanian Karissa Ling in straight heats, and Sinead Cosgrove who disposed of Carly McCoombe (V) in similar fashion. Dunn won in straight heats with Cosgrove picking up her third silver _ all behind her team mate_ but it went down to the wire in the battle for bronze. Ling won the first heat but her Bendigo opponent levelled the series with a front-running ride, a tactic she successfully employed in the decider to take the medal.

The final event of the night decided the remaining qualifiers for the under 15 women's scratch race final. Rebecca MacPherson (NSW), Sophie Ootes (SA), Josephine Butler (WA), Georgina Freeland (V) and Queenslanders Jessy Byrnes and Courtney Le Lay will join the state champions in this discipline in the final on the last night of competition.
