Day 1 - July 6

Home team domninates on day 1

Homegrown talent took center stage on opening night of the 2005 USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships in Trexlertown, Pa. as four national titles went to riders competing on their home track.

In her first year in the junior women's 17-18 ranks, Cindy Lakatosh (Trexlertown, Pa.) earned a ticket to this summer's junior world championships with her victory in the 500 meter time trial. Lakatosh clocked a time of 38.748 seconds, narrowly cracking the 38.847-second time standard necessary for an automatic selection to represent the United States in Austria this August.

Fresh off his win last weekend at the Independence Day Grand Prix, Ben Barczewski (Breinigsville, Pa.) improved upon his bronze medal performance from a year ago and won the national title in the men's 17-18 keirin. Barczewski outsprinted Spencer Hartfeld (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Mike Schnabel (Emmaus, Pa.) to earn the title.

Kimberly Geist (Emmaus, Pa.) successfully opened up defense of her three national titles from 2004 with a win in the junior women's 17-18 scratch race. Last year, Geist also captured wins in the individual pursuit and points race. Her win Wednesday night is her second national title of 2005 after Geist took home the stars and stripes jersey in the criterium at the Park City Cycling Festival last month.

In the junior men's 17-18 points race, Richard Schenck (Milford, N.J.) outscored Daniel Holloway (Morgan Hill, Calif.) 22-19 for the win.

In the younger categories, the quest for overall omnium titles began today with several individual events. Event winners included Shelbe Eck (Fogelsville, Pa.) in the women's 13-14 500 meter time trial, Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa.) in the men's 10-12 scratch race, Shane Kline (Bally, Pa.) in the men's 15-16 scratch race, Hannah Hayduk (Kutztown, Pa.) in the women's 10-12 scratch race and Catherine Fiedler (Long Beach, Calif.) in the women's 15-16 scratch race.
