Stewart the standout as Canberra gets the cash

Powerhouse Canberra track sprinter Kial Stewart, who is hoping to qualify for Australia's Commonwealth Games team, continued his raid of the prize pool during the second night of racing at Brisbane's Chandler Velodrome, winning both the men's 30 lap scratch Day and the derby.
The second night of racing saw a rescheduled program of events, carried over from the opening night of the carnival, which was postponed due to a thunderstorm. And for the second night in succession, it was the visiting riders who turned up ready to Day.
Mackay's Chloe Macpherson, who had already won the scratch Day from the original rained out program, made it look easy in her pet event, the keirin. The junior world champion had too much kick in the sprint for her main rivals, Anouska Edwards of Rockhampton, and Courtney Le Lay of the Balmoral club, who took the minor placings. The result was reversed in the women's 12 lap progressive points Day later in the night, with Edwards and Le Lay showing superior endurance to their world champion rival.
Strong Rockhampton contingent

Anouska Edwards is part of a 15 rider contingent to make the journey to Brisbane from the regional city of Rockhampton, which enjoys a reputation as one of Australia, and the world's, great sporting nurseries. In recent years it has become a production line for world class cyclists on the track and the road, and is home to the all conquering track superstars, the Meares sisters.
"We've picked up quite a few wins in the first couple of nights which is really good," said Rockhampton Club publicity officer Alex Bright. "I think it's a culture, there just seems to be so much of a culture of cycling in Rockhampton and so much support, the club is strong, there's plenty of people riding bikes if they're not competing."
Rockhampton will host its annual Cup on Wheels track carnival on the 20th and 21st of January, but in the meantime there are more spoils to be gained at Brisbane's summer of Cycling, with talents like junior world championship medalist Jeremy Hogg on the make.
"I think success breeds success," Bright told Cyclingnews. "There seem to be so many (Rockhampton) riders who are riding so well and performing at international level and national level both at junior level and senior level."
B1 and B2 - The tandem talents

They may take their nick-names from a couple of kids T.V. characters [an Australian program known as Bananas in Pyjamas - ed.], but the pairing dubbed B1 and B2 have so far shown they're no teddy bears on the track.
Tandem cyclists Ben Macffie and Ben Holmes of the Brisbane Broncos club have been letting their talent do the talking during the Summer of Cycling Carnival at Brisbane's Chandler Velodrome. Together on the bike for just four months, the two Ben's blasted their rivals off the track in the tandem event, and are aiming for bigger things, namely the national championship.
"We had a few close calls early on, probably made us a bit closer," Macffee told Cyclingnews.
The Summer of Cycling track carnival continues tonight and Saturday at Brisbane's Chandler Velodrome.
