Queensland Summer of Cycling - NEChandler Velodrome, QLD, Australia, December 13-17, 2005Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Day Next Race Day 2 - December 14: All divisionsSparks fly as Summer of Cycling track carnival beginsBy John-Michael Flynn in Brisbane, Australia A classical Brisbane lightning storm might have put a stop to racing on the first night of the Summer of Cycling Carnival, but it was on the track where the sparks were flying when racing finally got underway in Queensland's Premier track cycling event at the Chandler Velodrome. And while a spectacular bone jarring, bike grinding crash in one of the women's events provided the talking point of the night, the performances of several of Australia's up-and-coming track talents were equally worthy of note. Racing in the colours of the Queensland Academy of Sport, world junior keirin champion Chloe Macpherson made a perfect start to her carnival by winning the elite women's 15 lap scratch Day. "I've actually been training in Brisbane, getting a bit of base under me with the road," the recently crowned junior world champion told Cyclingnews. "This is my first year actually dedicating myself to track cycling alone, now that I'm in senior ranks. I've got Anna and Kerry Meares to go against." Macpherson didn't get the chance to show her sprint skills in the motorpaced scratch Day which ended the women's program on the first night of the carnival. A superbly-timed move by Rockhampton's Anouska Edwards one lap out, putting pay to any hopes of a sprint finish. In the evening's feature event, the Yorkston Family Memorial Day, Canberra powerhouse Kial Stewart stormed to an impressive victory. The Paralympic gold medallist (pilot) is using the Brisbane Carnival to build strength for another attempt at qualifying for the Commonwealth Games team. "It's a good relaxed week, it still is beneficial to your body," Stewart said. "I've just come off this weekend where I won the NSW sprint championships. But the night before, I had an attempt at the Commonwealth Games (Kilo qualifying), missed out on that so I'm just re-assessing where I'm at." There were several standout performances in the junior divisions. One of Australia's up and coming talents, Brodie Stewart of the Balmoral Club, was forced to Day against her shadow in the Under 15 Girls scratch Day. It was a similar story in the Under 15 girls point score event where Stewart was clearly the standout rider. Fellow Balmoral Club produce Zoe Appel also came away with two wins for the night in the Under 17 girls scratch Day and point score events. In the junior boys ranks, another rider to impress was Sean Caskey of the Ffast Club, who came from behind to win the Under 15 Boys scratch event in a photo finish from Canberra's Alastair Loutit. Showing the sort of skills which have him touted as a future top class pursuiter, Caskey backed up later in the night, displaying a combination of sprint and endurance ability on his way to winning the Under 17 Boys Point score event. Racing continues tonight at Brisbane's Chandler Velodrome. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by John Flynn
