The Palais des Sports was crowded every night for the last six nights, as the
city of Grenoble hosted the 35th Six Days of Grenoble. As the spectators cheered
and the guests dined underneath, within the velodrome oval, the last night of
Grenoble Six Day racing was completed by the Madison victory of French pair
Jérôme Neuville and Andy Flickinger, while the two overall leaders Alexander
Aeschbach and Franco Marvulli took their third win in Grenoble.
The Master du Sprint victory was taken by World Champion Theo Bos, just a
couple of centimetres in front of three time Olympic champion Florian Rousseau,
who celebrated his last appearance as a track rider at this event.
How it unfolded
While British Chris Hoy finished second in the Keirin finals, the French victory
by Arnaud Tournant inspired the crowd for a few La Ola laps. More French wins
were greeted later during the evening in the Espoir (U23) sprint finals, as
local rider Kevin Avarello surprised David Cabrol from behind and attacked with
two laps to go, taking the win easily with a 50 metre lead. François Pervis
finished fifth, saving enough points to keep his lead in the Overall classification
over Franck Durivaux.
Chris Hoy and Arnaud Tournant led out the Golden Sprint Keirin finals as the
Derny pulled off the track, but the victory was taken by Laurent Gané just in
front of German Jens Fiedler. Both champions are finishing their careers with
this race, leaving behind very successful racing careers.

The last race of the evening was the decisive 180-lap Madison, where overall
leaders Alexander Aeschbach and Franco Marvulli started with 101 points lead
over Italian chasers Giovanni Lombardi and Marco Villa. The first action started
with Australian pair Darren Young and Nathan Clarke trying to take a lap. Lombardi
then attacked after 30 laps, but was chased down by the Swiss team right away,
Marvulli taking the lead later, effectively securing another lap for the final
victory. However, the Italians, Belgians and French top three behind the Swiss
pair in the overall points classification came back, and there were four teams
on the same lap as the race entered the last 100.
Lombardi and Villa attacked to gain one lap, as did French Flickinger and Neuville,
trying to move up to a third final placing. The peloton led by the Belgians
Keisse and Van Mechelen caught up to them. The Australian and Danish teams tried
to escape again with 65 laps to go, and the bunch let them go as they were no
threat to the final outcome of the evening. Soon after that, the Italians attacked
the top classification again, but did not succeed in taking a lap. During the
final 40 laps, sprint points were added every 10 laps and with 30 laps to go,
Jérôme Neuville crossed the line first on his way to lapping the peloton together
with Keisse/Van Mechelen. The peloton, meanwhile, was controlled by the Swiss
winning pair, as Neuville's partner Andy Flickinger caught the bunch at 6 laps
to go in a final effort. The two Frenchmen had put all their remaining energy
into winning enough sprint points to win the race, while Alexander Aeschbach
and Franco Marvulli rode a safe overall victory home, finishing the Six Day
race 105 points ahead of Italian duo Giovanni Lombardi and Marco Villa.
