Edinburgh Festival Meadowbank GPAugust 7-8, 2004Librizzi turns on the styleLocal favourite Marco Librizzi (City of Edinburgh RC) produced a polished performance to take the honours in the British Sprinters League at the Edinburgh Festival Grand Prix. The Commonwealth Games team sprint bronze medallist was the fastest qualifier with a time of 11.58 seconds, and was barely troubled as he swept aside all comers in the early rounds to set up a final clash with Dave Heald (VC St Raphael). Librizzi won the first leg with a long last lap effort that his rival could not match, then took the second ride with a scintillating effort around the final bend. Heald had earlier eliminated league leader Matthew Haynes (City of Edinburgh) who later saw off his team mate Graeme Steen to take third place and retain top spot in the overall table. Ben Elliott (VC St Raphael) lifted the British Omnium Championship on Day 1 by the narrowest of margins ahead of James McCallum (Pedal Power). The pair went into the final event, the 15 kilometres scratch, tied on points. McCallum tracked his rival throughout the 60 lap contest but narrowly failed to overhaul Elliott in the final sprint. Mark Kelly (City of Edinburgh RC) took third place and was back on the podium on Sunday after posting a stylish win in the Derny Challenge and taking third spot in the 15 kilometre scratch race. Elliott also continued on the victory trail, winning his speciality event, the Keirin, and the 3 kilometre scratch, while hardworking 14 year old Adam Blythe (Planet X - On One) caught the eye when he mixed it with senior opponents and Adam Duggleby (Steve Goff Frames) brought down the curtain on a successful weekend's racing when he sprinted clear of John Stollery (Velo Ecosse) on the last lap to take the 15 kilometre scratch. Kate Cullen (City of Edinburgh RC) was a class apart in the women's events, winning all five races in the Omnium League and setting a new Scottish record of 38.66 seconds in the 500 Metres time trial along the way. Angela Dolan (Terrydolan.com) battled hard for second place, with Katrina Hair (Johnstone Wheelers) third. Martin McGarry (Edinburgh Racers) won the Youths Omnium ahead of Luke Jones (Nomads) and Kieron McMahon (Edinburgh Racers).
