Day 6 - September 12: Points Race

At the end of the penultimate day of the World Masters Track Cycling Championships in Manchester, America still head the medals table by one gold medal from Great Britain.

Men's Age Group 30-34 years

The points race in this age category was arguably the most exciting ever seen at the World Masters Track Championships with the first three riders all collecting fifty eight points. The winner was decided on count back. With the most sprint wins was Canada's Scott Laliberte.

The other two riders, Curtis Gunn of the USA, and Australia's Peter Coulson both had one sprint victory each. The Silver medal was then awarded to Gunn who had the most second places in the sprints, with Coulson collecting Bronze. Gunn added his Silver to the Bronze in the Pursuit while Coulson completed a hat trick of podium places. His others were first in the Pursuit and third in the 500m Time Trial.

Men's Age Group 35-39 years

British riders dominated the points race with the winner in doubt until the final sprint. The lead changed hands several times, with first Keith Coffey who represents the South London BEC club, and then Melton Rowbray's Jeff Snodin who races for Team Bradgate.

With just one sprint remaining the two riders were level on twenty eight points. Coffey crossed the line first to win Gold. - Snodin was second over the line to collect three points and his toll of thirty one points was enough to earn him Silver, the same colour medal as twelve months ago. Austria's Karl Schopf won Bronze with a final score of twenty four.

Men's Age Group 40-44 years

Shaun Wallace of Great Britain, showed his opponents just how a points race should be ridden when he lapped the field twice to collect his second Gold medal of the Championships. The forty one year old, who is now based in the States but represents the Harlow club when in Britain, amassed forty three points to end the race 28 points ahead of Australia's Grant Law.

Law collected his second Silver of the Championships having finished second in the sprint. His total of sixteen was one more than Britain's Adrian Thorp of Dukinfield Cycling club. Wallace who won medals at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games in the 90's, established a World Best time when he won the 3000m Pursuit.

Men's Age Group 45-49 years

Larry Nolan won a second Gold medal when he won the 20 Kilometre points race. The American collected forty five points to beat Aubrey Gordon by just three points. Bronze went to Bernardo Figueroa of Columbia with thirty three points.

Gordon from Guyana led with the final two sprints when Nolan edged ahead by one point. Nolan also took maximum points in the final sprint to secure the Gold medal. - For Gordon it was an improvement over last year where he won Bronze. Nolan's first Gold came in the 3000m Pursuit twenty four hours earlier.

Men's Age Group 50-54 years

Alfred Lechnitz of Austria was awarded the Gold medal in the 15km Points race. His points total of 32 was the same as his fellow countryman Ludwig Kronfuss but on count back Lechnitz won the sprints.

Kronfuss' medal was his second of the Championships. On Wednesday he proved too strong for his opponents in the Pursuit where he took Gold. Britain's Dick Cubison took Bronze. The Rutland rider collected ten points.

Men's Age Group 55-59 years

America's Mark Rodamaker won the 55-59 years Points title with a perfectly timed attack just before half distance in the 15 Kilometres race. Rodamaker's solid effort saw him rapidly lap the field to take his first World Masters Gold with 22 points. Britain's Willi Moore of Liverpool had to settle for the Silver for the second year running, five points in arrears. Chris Anstey scored consistently to achieve a Bronze medal score of 12 points.
