Day 4 - September 10: Individual Pursuit, Sprint

USA still heads medal table

With three days remaining in the World Masters Track Cycling Championships in Manchester America still lead the medals table followed closely by Great Britain with Australia third.

Men's Age Group 50-54 years Individual Pursuit

Ludwig Kronfuss won Austria's first World Masters Track title when he peddled his way to victory on the 2000m pursuit. Kronfuss qualified for the final 0.6 behind Britain's Steve Davies. In the ride off for Gold and Silver, Kronfuss lifted his speed to improve by over one and a half seconds to 2m 22.132 seconds. This placed him three and a half seconds ahead of Davies a member of the Ferryhill Wheelers club.

Earlier this year in San Johann, Austria, the fifty three year old won Gold at the World Masters Road Championships.

The ride off for the Bronze was a very close contest with Canada's Gerard Louis Robert snatching the third spot with a time of 2m 29.931, 0.068 seconds ahead of Neil Arnold a member of the East Bradford club.

Men's Age Group 55-59 years Individual Pursuit

Denis Fahey moved up one place from last year to take Gold in the 2000m pursuit. Fahey from Australia, established a world best mark of 2m 24.569 seconds on the qualifying ride twelve months ago. This time his time of 2m 28.331 placed him second going into the ride off for Gold and Silver. His time of 2m 28.331 placed him just over 1 seconds slower than Willi Moore an Olympic and World Team medallist in the 70's.

In the final repeated his qualifying time but Moore from Liverpool was some 2 seconds slower to take Silver. Fahey quickly established an earlier lead Moore closed down but could not quite get on level terms.

The Bronze medal went to America's Mark Rodamaker, when he recorded 2m 32.511 seconds beating Canada's Christopher Anstey by three fifths. This was the American's second Bronze of the Championships. His first was in the Sprint.

Men's Age Group 60-64 years Individual Pursuit

Victor Copeland completed a hat trick of Gold Medals when he won the 2000m pursuit. Earlier in the week the American proved too strong for his rivals in the Sprint and Time Trial.

In the pursuit Copeland, who qualified as the fastest, once again was too strong for his opponent Barrie Hartley of Great Britain. Copeland caught Hartley, a member of the Airdale Olympic club, after 2m 17.165 seconds of racing. The American came on to record 2m 27.025 seconds for the full distance.

Henry Fort Pino of France, beat the defending champion, David South of Australia, to take Bronze. Pino went ahead just before the half way stage to record 2m 37.208, 1.405 ahead of South.

Men's Age Group 65plus years Individual Pursuit

Brian Dacey won Gold in the 200m pursuit taking the lead with first ever 1 lap. In this all British final, Roland Crayford was the fastest qualifier recording 2m 36.902, 0.181 faster than Dacey.

Dacey, a member of the London based De Lawne club, saved his best till last taking the title with a time of 2m 36.487, finishing 1.690 seconds ahead of the Kent based San Fairy Ann club.

Ireland's Richard Keller collected his second Bronze with a time of 2m 48.173 seconds.

Men's Age Group 70plus years Individual Pursuit

Keith Harrison collected his second Gold medal when he won the 2000m pursuit, his first came in the sprint event. Harrison who two years ago, won all four disciplines - sprint, time trial, pursuit and points, in the younger age group 65 plus.

Women's Age Group 40-44 years Sprint

Isabel Leon Moncada, of Mexico, moved up one spot from last year to take Gold in the Sprint event. She followed her rival all the way until the final lap when she smoothly moved passed her rival, Germany's Petra Kluender. This was Kluender's second Silver of the Championships. Her other medal came in the 500m Time Trial.

In the ride off for Bronze, Diane Scullard of South Africa, crossed the line ahead of Marianne Harding of Great Britain.

Women's Age Group 45-49 years Sprint

Marion Bax successfully defended her sprint crown when she once again proved too strong for Britain's Glynis Francis in a repeat result of twelve months ago. Earlier in the Championships, Francis took Gold in the 500m Time Trial with Bax third.

Women's Age Group 50 plus years Sprint

Charlotte Miller of the USA, went one better than her Silver of twelve months ago, when she swept over the line first to win the Sprint competition. In second spot was last year's Bronze medallist Britain's Val Rushworth from Wakefield. The defending champion Anne Stevens from Great Britain, had to settle for Bronze this time around.

The Championships will continue tomorrow with Men's and womens Pursuit races. Racing concludes on Saturday with a varied programme of races culminating with the Muratti Cup race.
