Carney proves his point, Uhl finds her legs at last

By Kristy Scrymgeour in Colorado Springs

Today was the final day of racing at the 7UP Velodrome at Colorado Springs, and this time the weather was hot and dry. The day was made up of women's and men's team sprints, the Madison and the women's 10km scratch final.

Only one women's team, made up of Chris Witty, Jenn Wangerin and Jillian Vogtli entered the Women's Team Sprint and much to their surprise they won in a time of 1.10.386.

The men's event turned out to be a battle between the USA and Canada. In the qualifying event Cody Racing I - made up of keirin winner Gideon Massie, sprint winner Stephen Alfred and kilo winner Christian Stahl - clocked the fastest time by two seconds over Mother of all Bombs, the team with the big fan club, made up of Mike Beers, Anton Quist and Eduardo Cocina. In the final Cody Racing got a somewhat slower start and it was down to their last rider, Stahl to ensure the victory by a very small margin.

Jame Carney proved once again this weekend that he is an 'endurance sprinter' to contend with, when he and Madison partner Mike Tillman took the win over the Ofoto/Jelly Belly mixed team of Colby Pierce and Tyler Farrar. The event was not without mishaps when Kenny Williams (Saturn of Seattle) skipped his back wheel in an exchange and hit the deck quite hard, causing officials to neutralize the event with 17 laps remaining. Williams got up and was okay, but his teammate Curtis Tolson had to race the rest of the race alone. In a determined effort he still managed to bring it home to keep third place.

In the women's scratch race it was Sarah Uhl (Saturn) who finally redeemed herself to take the win after a disappointing start to the weekend. Uhl had to pull out of the points race on Friday night due to a breathing problem, and struggled to pull it together until this morning. "I definitely struggled with this week," said Uhl. "It is my first time racing at altitude and I started racing like I was at home (in Pennsylvania). My physical problem in the points race led to a bit of a mental obstacle that I had to overcome But I think I do well under pressure and today I knew this was the only race left and my only opportunity to qualify for worlds. So I am happy with the result."

Uhl is happy to be going to World's, but of course would prefer to be racing the points race. "I was pretty disappointed about my points race because that was my major goal," she said. "There is no scratch race in the Olympics which is why I want to focus on the points, but at least this year I will be able to get my feet wet and race against some of the girls who will be at the Olympics."

Uhl, who has been racing a lot of criteriums this year with her Saturn team, is also keen to try her hand at the pursuit. "When I get home, I think I will focus on that and try to do a pursuit at Nationals." According to her coach Bob, Sarah's natural event is the points race as "she has got the match sprint tactics and the endurance from the criteriums." However he is also keen to see her try a pursuit.

With the qualifying event all over, track riders will now have to wait until June 27 for official word as to whether they will be going to World Championships and Pan American Games.
