Devonport Trial Wheel - NEDevonport, Tasmania, Australia December 16, 2003Menzies makes amendsBy Rod Morris in Devonport Launceston cyclist Karl Menzies went one better than the previous week when he won Devonport Trial Wheel on Tuesday night. In a thrilling race at the Devonport Oval, Menzies made amends for his second place in the Patrick Latrobe Trial Wheel, beating home Ulverstone teenager Ben Price, while former Austral Wheel winner Matthew Atkins claimed third, just ahead of Launceston fireman Craig Burrows, who although in the veteran class, is racing in top form. Menzies, more noted as a road rider, is still fresh from last month's Jayco Tour of Queensland, but showed his class on the track, with a stylish win, atoning for his second placing behind Daniel Cutting at Latrobe 7 days earlier. For Price it was the second week in a row he had finished one place behind Menzies. Launceston rider Brendan Geale was in good form in the 2000 m handicap, winning from Menzies, scratchman Nathan Clarke and Burrows. Clarke won the 6 km warm-up scratch but was later upstaged by Matthew Atkins in the closing A Grade Scratch. Atkins broke clear of the peloton with about 3 laps remaining and was never headed. American riders Andy Sparks and Sarah Hammer made guest appearances at the Devonport Trial Wheel programme, which was conducted by the Mersey Valley - Devonport Cycling Club, but found the Australian system of handicap racing slightly foreign. In junior racing, winners of the age group Devonport Trial Wheels were Jarrod Harman (Under 17), Alex Holden (U15) and Madison Catlin (U13). The Tasmanian cycling calendar switches to the State's rugged West Coast this Saturday with the staging of the 47th annual Rosebery Carnival.
