Dad, what's an omnium? - UCI re-introduces the omnium, News feature, March 23, 2006
Way back when...
It has been nearly four decades since an omnium was contested at the world track cycling championships. It’s understood that Patrick Sercu (right), current impresario of many Six Day events, lobbied the UCI to re-introduce the event. Sercu is still the most successful Six Day racer ever, and also a more-than-competent road sprinter. He is shown here in Vincennes, France, with Belgian champion Eddy Merckx (L) and Raymond Poulidor (C) on July 21, 1974, at the velodrome of Vincennes, after Merckx won the Tour de France for the fifth time. Sercu won the points jersey.
