With another dynamic sprint win, La Spezia speedster Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) made it three wins from five stages today, showing he's clearly the strongest sprinter at this year's Tour de France. It was a hot day on the long rolling stage that followed the same pattern of the last three en-ligne stages.
"Today I was 5th wheel at 300 meters. It can be pretty risky to start that far back but I came off of Zabel's wheel and was able to win," he said following his latest victory.
When asked about his future plans, Petacchi explained he had none in particular. "I'm not thinking about a green jersey, or a yellow jersey at all. I'm taking it one day at a time. But I'm pretty tired; more mentally than physically."
Petacchi has made a lot of progress since his last Tour. At this point, Petacchi's team director Giancarlo Ferretti is hoping the classy sprinter will not only make it to Paris but possibly contend for the Maillot Vert, but other observers expect him to abandon on Saturday as the mountains commence.
"Le regionale", local lad Frederic Finot (Jean Delatour) did well today. He got in an early break, won both of the day's KOM's and ended up on the podium at the end of the stage wearing the Maillot Pois of the Tour's best climber.

His tearful fiancé Lucie told French TV after the stage that "Oh, it's formidable... all the sacrifices he makes for cycling so this is so nice." Finot, who comes from a cycling family (his sister Magalie will ride the Le Grande Boucle Féminin next month) lives only 2km from today's finish, will start Stage 6 to Lyon clad in the polka-dot jersey.
Before today's start, Birthday boy Victor Hugo Pena (USPS-Berry Floor) was awarded his weight in champagne. Not because it was his birthday, but because of his Maillot Jaune status. Peña, a former champion swimmer took it took it easy today with Lance and the rest of his boys in the peloton, since USPS chose to not defend the Pena's jersey
American Fast Freddy Rodriguez got the nod today to go for the sprint at Vini Caldirola. The Emeryville, CA. rider had some thrills but no spills in Nevers. "I was on Petacchi's wheel with 300m to go when Kirsipuu pushed me out," he told Cyclingnews. "At that speed, it was hard to get back into the action. But I'm feeling better and better at this Tour."

Although the French media is portraying Petacchi as the world's greatest sprinter, it's also clear that something is amiss in the finishes at the 2003 Tour de France. Without Mario Cipollini and his Domina Vacanze team to control the sprint finale, the stages have fallen into a chaotic pattern that looks likely to continue tomorrow.
A final note on today's stage. With less than two kilometres to go, ONCE's sprinter Angel Vicioso hit the deck in the mad scramble for position. He was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a double fracture of his radius, meaning that his start tomorrow is extremely unlikely.
Stage 6 - July 11: Nevers-Lyon, 230km
As the summer heat continues Friday, the Tour peloton will go from Nevers across the upper Loire River valley through Saone-Et-Loire and down into the Rhone River valley to Lyon. Stage 6 ought to be a long hot ride to Lyon, one of the six original Tour villes etapes from the 1903 edition and France's third-largest city.
