Petacchi makes it two out of three at Le Tour

It's been a long and winding road for 26 year old Jean-Patrick Nazon (Jean Delatour) to the top step of the podium at the Tour de France. Yesterday, Nazon was a close second to stage winner and former teammate Baden Cooke, but today, thanks to great riding in the intermediate sprints, Nazon turned the tables on his old team that dumped him last year and donned the coveted Maillot Jaune of the Tour de France.
Nazon got to live the dream of any bike racer, one that's even more special for a French rider, to lead the Tour de France, even for just one day. "I can't imagine wearing the Maillot Jaune until it's actually on my shoulders," said a euphoric Nazon when he realized after Stage 3 that the legendary golden tunic would be his. "I'm so happy to wear the Maillot Jaune for at least one day."
Happy indeed to even have a team this year, as Nazon was dropped by the FDJeux.com team at the end of last season after six seasons and nine career wins when his long-time director Marc Madiot cleaned house. "It was tough to find a team for this year - I have to thank Jean Delatour for the confidence they showed in me."
But Nazon's Maillot Jaune will likely be short-lived, with tomorrow's team time trial certain to cause a shake-up in the Tour classement general.
Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) took his second stage win at this year's Centenary Tour with yet another lead out blast off the front after an exceptionally fast stage to St.Dizier (48.339 km/h avg.). The speedster from La Spezia put it down again in a big-time testa a testa with Roman Vainsteins' Vini Caldirola team. Vainsteins got a great leadout from teammate Fast Freddy Rodriguez, but the almost telepathic synergy between Petacchi and his leadout man Marco Velo is unstoppable as long as Petacchi is around in the finale. "I did a great sprint today and as the (Tour) goes on, my legs are getting better. I haven't raced since the end of the Giro, so it's still real tough for me to hang on with the hills," said Petacchi.

Freddy Rodriguez told Cyclingnews, "I was in a good position at 500 meters and at 250 meters, I went when Petacchi jumped early. The sprint went better today, but I'm still disappointed we didn't win."
However,Vainsteins was satisfied himself as his condition is improving every day. "Fred and the team are doing great work for me and I have to thank them... Petacchi went early in the sprint but that was no excuse... I'm hoping for a win soon," said Vainsteins.
Although Brad McGee lost his Yellow Jersey today, there were no worries for the other two Aussies who are sporting special jerseys at the Tour de France. Robbie McEwen increased his points lead in the Maillot Vert with a solid fifth place today. The Gold Coast's golden boy told Cyclingnews, "I was between Petacchi and Vainsteins for a bit, but then they started sprinting and I lost the wheel. All I could do was to try and get going again..."
McEwen continued, "I'd gone all that way and tried so hard, so I still tried to sprint the best I could, but under pretty dangerous circumstances... when you watch the sprint from overhead you'll probably see how lucky I was that I stayed on the bike..."

Not so lucky was Rene Haselbacher (Gerolsteiner), who had a spectacular head over heels crash with 250m to go in the sprint. Haselbacher was banged up with bruises and road rash on his left thigh, but should start tomorrow.
Tyler Hamilton had another tough day in the saddle with the fast, hard stage but the hard man from Marblehead hung in there once again and finished 43rd. Hamilton's wife Haven will reportedly arrive at the Tour de France tomorrow to give her man sweet succour as Tyler will give it his all in tomorrow's Team Test for his CSC boys. Can Hamilton endure the pain from his cracked collarbone in the tuck position on his TT bike? He'll have 69km to find out tomorrow.
How it unfolded
The third stage of the Tour headed due south from the mining town of Charleville Mézières across the rolling hills of the Marne and Meuse regions to Saint-Dizier. At the start, Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step-Davitamon) was active, looking to get in a break today on the first climb. Bettini told Cyclingnews, "my legs are getting better every day," so watch for il Grillo to show his maglia tricolore at any opportunity. Maillot Pois Christophe Mengin was just behind Bettini as the Italian champ grabbed the first KOM, but the move was covered in a massive reaction by the peloton, which upped the speed with continuous attacks.

Jean-Patrick Nazon had great sprinting legs today. He was second in the first sprint and won the second, riding into the Yellow Jersey at Ville-sur-Tourbe' after 74km.
Eventually the powers in the peloton gave Brioches la Boulangère rider Anthony Geslin some grace, and the red-clad 23-year-old was away after 83km as Michael Boogerd of Rabobank hit the deck hard and banged his knee, requiring stitches post-stage.
Geslin was away for almost 70km before being sucked back into the heaving maw of the hungry peloton. Behind, virtual Maillot Jaune J-P Nazon became ever more Yellow with second in the day's third intermediate sprint in Mogeneville. Finally, Petacchi won a tumultuous sprint ahead of a resurgent Vainsteins and fast-closing Oscar Freire (Rabobank). All the favourites like Armstrong, Ullrich, Simoni and Beloki finished safely in the field today in St.Dizier.
Stage 4 - Wednesday, July 9: Joinville-Saint Dizier Team TT, 69 km
After the Paris prologue, it's the next first major moment of truth in the Centenary Tour. A rolling team time test through the farmlands of the Haute Marne region will favour power teams like ONCE, USPS and Credit Agricole. Weather is forecast to be warm, sunny and dry along the gentle up and down rollers of Haute Marne with a 15-20km tailwind that should see some spectacular speeds tomorrow.
Look for a head to head battle between USPS-Berry Floor and O.N.C.E. and for once, USPS-Berry Floor could get the better of the solid Spanish TTT specialists as they'll not only be riding behind ONCE's splits, but will be clad in new, high tech "Swift Spin" time trial suits. Victor Hugo Peña may take the Maillot Jaune away from Jean-Patrick Nazon and become the first-ever Colombian to sport the leader's jersey in the Tour de France.
