90th Tour de France - July 5-27, 2003Main Page Live report Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 20 - Sunday, July 27: Ville d'Avray - Paris Champs-Elysées, 152 kmMan Alive! Armstrong goes five out of five
JP Nazon wins final stage as Cooke takes green jerseyBy Tim Maloney, European editor in Paris When Lance Armstrong climbed the podium of the Centenary Tour de France Sunday afternoon in Paris for the fifth consecutive year, the strains of America's national anthem once again wafted across France's Main Street, the Champs-Elysées. Adorned with the red, white and blue of France's tricoleur, America's Stars and Stripes and the Lone Star flag of Texas, Lance's Maillot Jaune shone brighter than ever before as he joined the elite club of cyclists who have won five Tours de France. And Armstrong's performance this year at the Tour finally endeared the American to the French public, who embraced the more human dimension of a slightly diminished but far from defeated champion. The final stage ended in a massive bunch sprint, won by French rider Jean-Patrick Nazon (Jean Delatour) who took advantage of the battle between Robbie McEwen and Baden Cooke for the green jersey and shot up the centre of the road. When he crossed the line in front, he was almost in disbelief that he'd won. In second place was Baden Cooke (FDJeux.com), who just beat Robbie McEwen on the line. That was enough to give Cooke the green jersey by just two points, with McEwen having to settle for second. The sprint finish came about after an enterprising eight man breakaway, containing Blaudzun (CSC), Bodrogi (Quick.Step), Garcia Acosta (iBanesto), Astarloza (Ag2r), Latasa (Kelme), Hary (Brioches), Hinault (Credit Agricole) and de Groot (Rabobank), was swallowed up with just over three kilometres to go, after Telekom, Cofidis, FDJeux.com and Jean Delatour all contributed to the chase. When it came back together, the leadout trains had disintegrated, and it was up to individual team riders to guide their sprinters home. McGee started the leadout, before Hushovd took over, then Cooke and McEwen hit the front. However, Nazon saw an opening in the centre and flew past the Australians, who were locked in combat, to take the stage. USPS wins poker game againThis year's historical Centenary Tour was the fastest ever, averaging 40.940 km/h over its 3427.5 km distance. It was also one of the closest and most hard-fought Tours ever, starting under warm summer skies in Paris, then beginning to bake under a week-long heatwave that nearly cooked the majority of the peloton, including Maillot Jaune Armstrong. But Lance's chief rival Jan Ullrich, recovering from a fever after Stage 4's team time trial, thrives in the heat, and began to ride in to the best form of his life. When the heat finally broke in the Pyrenees, Armstrong was on the rebound. Johan Bruyneel masterminded the US Postal Service presented by Berry Floor team's bicycle poker match across the Pyrenees, outplaying his rival directors hands down. As Armstrong said, "we relied more on strategy and tactics to win this year." Postal's team was not as dominant this year as in 2002, but George Hincapie and Chechu Rubiera did sterling support work for Lance. Bruyneel's acquisition of climber Manuel "Triki" Beltran from Coast two months before the Tour turned out to be a stroke of genius, as Triki filled in well for the usual super climber Roberto Heras who was sick with bronchitis. At the post-race press conference on the Champs-Elysées, Armstrong said, "It's a dream, really a dream to win my fifth Tour. Now it's difficult to think about it. This year, the Tour was very, very hard, the hardest but now I'm very happy because it's finished and I'm really tired. But for sure, I'll be back next year. I love cycling. I love my job and next year I'll come back to go for a sixth win. We'll change my program a little bit for next year and we'll hope for a little good luck next year since we had some bad luck this year." "This was my hardest win - we dodged some bullets," said Armstrong. "It was a rough year at the Tour and I don't plan to make the same mistakes twice. But my win feels more satisfying; more than the others because of that. The crashes and near crashes takes it out of you. "During this Tour, I started with some little physical problems. before the Tour, I had diarrhoea and stomach problems and then tendonitis in the hips from new shoes and cleats. I wasn't feeling normal on the bike." Armstrong chronicled his ups and downs at the Centenary Tour: "There was the crash in Stage 1 and we were really good in the Team Time Trial, but then there was my near fatal mistake of getting dehydrated in the TT. That moment with Beloki crashing out was almost a disaster. Beloki could have been a spoiler in this Tour. On l'Alpe d'Huez, the tactics in front didn't take advantage with the situation with Ullrich being dropped. But when I crashed and came back to win at Luz-Ardiden, that was the point when things started to go well." Jan Ullrich (Bianchi) was a surprising and worthy foe for Lance Armstrong, who said going into the Tour that the rider he feared most was Jan. "Nobody motivates me as much as Ullrich," said Lance of the big red-headed German powerhouse. "He gave us a lot of problems and is back to his highest level ever. He kept us up at night." Ullrich was happy but not totally satisfied with his Tour de France performance this year. "I'm a little bit sad the way things went, but when I think about it, second place is really good," said Ullrich. "After all the problems I had this year with Team Coast and having so few races this spring, it's good. In the next years, I'm sure the Tour will be mine and hope to win it again." Ullrich ended up one minute and one second behind Armstrong this year and certainly such a solid performance by Jan will motivate him to come back to the 2004 Tour de France to win. Ullrich's friend and former Telekom teammate Alexander Vinokourov had a superb Tour to finish on the podium in third place. Vinokourov was voted the most combative rider of this year's Tour and the gutsy rider from Petropavlosk, Kazakhstan showed that his wins this year in Paris-Nice, Amstel Gold and Tour de Suisse were no fluke with his Paris podium. Gutsy riders were no shortage in this year's Tour, as demonstrated by Tyler Hamilton and his CSC squad. After team leader Hamilton hit the deck on Stage 1 and came up with a cracked collarbone, it seemed like CSC's Tour might end before it started. But Hamilton toughed it out through the Alps and recovered in the Pyrenees. Master motivator Bjarne Riis kept his guys focused all the way to Paris, where CSC came away with the team classification prize and three stage wins, including a super solo effort by Hamilton, who ended up a superb fourth place in Paris. The modest Man from Marblehead said, "I want to thank everyone who helped me in the Tour, especially all the French people who encouraged me. I hope to come back and do better next year." Spanish riders had an uneven Centenary Tour. Euskaltel put two riders in the top 10, with Zubeldia in fifth and Mayo sixth. Twenty-five-year-old Mayo showed a lot of promise and his superb win on l'Alpe d'Huez marked him as a future Tour danger man. French riders had a good performance at this year's Tour. France's most popular rider, Richard Virenque (Quick.Step-Davitamon) won a big stage win in Morzine, taking the Maillot Jaune for a day. But "Allez Richard" was really after his sixth Maillot Pois title as the Tour's best climber, which he took in fine style. Credit Agricole's Christophe Moreau was top Frenchman on general classification (GC) with an excellent eighth. Up and coming French rider Sylvain Chavanel (Brioches La Boulangère) was a respectable 37th on GC, with good rides on Luz-Ardiden and Stage 19's time trial. With the absence of World Champion Mario Cipollini, the Centenary Tour saw early domination by quadruple stage winner Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo). Petacchi ended up abandoning on the stage to Morzine, while wearing the green points jersey, suffering from the illness that took out half of his team. Then the chase for the Maillot Vert became a ding-dong sprinters' battle between Aussies Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) and Baden Cooke (FDJeux.com). The Cooke-McEwen Show came down to the final sprint in Paris, where the talented young bushranger from Benalla Cooke edged Robbie by just two points. Baden and Robbie's fellow Aussie Stuey O'Grady (Credit Agricole) will be buying the beer Sunday night in Paris as he captured the special €50,000 Prize of the Centenaire, awarded to the rider who finished highest of the original Tour stages to Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nantes and Paris. Italians had another quiet Tour de France, as Ivan Basso (Fassa Bortolo) was a good seventh place, while Giro d'Italia winner Gibo Simoni (Saeco) won the Queen Stage to Loudienvielle but was not a factor on GC. British hope David Millar (Cofidis) managed to grab a win on the Centenary Tour's penultimate stage but was a disappointment on GC with his 55th place, an hour and 54 minutes behind Armstrong. Lanterne Rouge was Hans De Clercq, Robbie McEwen's loyal domestique on Lotto-Domo, at 4h48'35". Lance Armstrong will ride two criteriums in Austria and Denmark next week, then ride the Breitling Cup TT with Viatcheslav Ekimov on Saturday before taking some much needed R&R with his family. Armstrong will ride in the T-Mobile Grand Prix on September 14th in San Francisco, but won't ride the World Championships this year in Canada. Instead, Armstrong will begin a promo tour for his second book, "Every Second Counts" as well as supporting his cancer charity rides called "Tour Of Hope". The final word goes to Armstrong. "I won't start my preparation right away for next year's Tour. I want to take some time off but I'll be back next year to win. I'm not looking for second place!"
