Eurobike 2002Friedrichshafen, Germany, August 29-September 1, 2002Eddy Merckx 2003By Tim Maloney Eddy Merckx needs no introduction. His Meise, Belgium factory produces some of the top road bikes worldwide and this year at Eurobike, Merckx presented two new and innovative models that are a departure from his usual classic approach to bike building. The all-carbon fiber Carbon GX2 has a sloping carbon monocoque frame made from Easton GX2 carbon tubing, with an integrated 1 1/8in headtube. With a total weight of 1.63kg for frame and fork and available in four sizes (44-47-50-53), this new Merckx should be a much sought-after bike. Eddy has also added a frame with carbon fiber rear seatstays, the Race. This model uses Easton custom 7000 series aluminum up front along with the new rear end, plus an integrated 1 1/8in headtube. Merckx Race is available in either traditional or sloping geometry and weighs in at 1.750g, including frame and fork in traditional geometry.
