Scmokin" Hot at the New Jersey State ITT Championships

Riders flew down the intensely hot but fast and flat roads of the New Jersey Pine Barrens on Sunday June 30th at the state's Individual Time Trial Championships.Temperatures rose through the low 90's along the straight and barely shaded road down the 40K out-and-back course in Chatsworth, NJ.

But the blazing heat did not keep Lou Schimmel (Bikery/Fuji) from approaching the course record within seconds at a time of 52:25 at a "schmokin'" pace of 28.4 mph, according to race promoter Lee Mestres of Mambo Kings Racing.

Schimmel, now the New Jersey State TT champion, rose to 2nd place in the closely contested Garden State Cup, just 24 points behind Rafal Urzedowski (Watchung Wheelmen).Many male competitors were put to shame by the 25.6 mph pace by veteran Elizabeth Tyrell (Somerset Wheelmen) to take the women's State title. She now has a commanding 69 point lead in the Women's Cup.

The event, promoted by Mambo Kings Racing for a fifth year, had nearly 200 competitors ranging from age twelve to over sixty-five. The race continues to grow in popularity and draw riders from out of state because of its reputation for being a smooth and speedy course. The Mambo Kings wish to thank Woodland Township, NJ for their support of the event.
