Walker lands State Champs, Paolinetti shows steel
The sleepy little lettuce town of Guadalupe, California was the host city venue for the California State Criterium Championship. With Manhattan Beach Grand Prix the following day and $10,000 cash on the line, many top ranking U.S. pros found it to be the perfect excuse to pay a visit to the coastal town.
From the gun, Schroeder Iron turned the screws on the field and sent many riders home early. Soon the break was off with Schroeder Iron's Jamie Paolinetti, and Roberto Gaggioli driving the pace, and Chris Walker (Zombies) content on taking the free ride.
With the half-mile course and lead up to 25 seconds, it looked like the break was going to try to lap the field, then the "tug of war" was on- back and forth, 15 seconds, then 20 seconds, and back to 15 seconds. In the closing laps, Schroeder Iron sent off Hiten Clarks, Michael Johnson, and Jacob Eirker trying to bridge to the break. This forced Chris Walker to work in the final laps, thus sealing the deal for Schroeder Iron, giving Paolinetti the win, Gaggioli second. Chris Walker settled for 3rd but took the State Amateur Crown.
