Lincoln Plating Spring Classics – Criterium #3

Mahoney Park, Lincoln, Nebraska, April 14, 2002

Criterium Points Title Goes to McWilliams

By John Lefler, Jr

In a hotly contested points competition, Joe McWilliams of NHS/UNMC/Team Kaos held on to finish third and secure the overall points championship by 4.5 points over teammate Chris Spence in the Cat. 1/2 race on Sunday afternoon at Mahoney Park in Lincoln.

However, the real story of the day was the return of RCRC's Christian Davenport to the front of affairs, and the soild performances of SNORT standout Darin Schlak and NHS/UNMC/Team Kaos rider Ian Robertson (both Cat. 3). After only 10 minutes, Davenport along with Robertson, Schlake and overall race winner Banning Ostrow of the Minneapolis based SuperTeam Racing squad broke away and set a blistering pace to eventually lap the field.

As the Cat. 1/2 second place finisher Davenport later explained, "I needed to do well this week. After my poor performance last weekend, I knew I had to have a good day."
