Results and Reports for May 25-31 2002USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Hills of SomersetNew Jersey, May 27, 2002ReportWith one of the best fields in it's short history, the Hills of Somerset included several pro teams and the area's best amateur squads, all eager to test their strength prior to the weekends big test in Somerville on Monday. With teams limited to 5 man squads, the Navigators and Ofoto teams decided to make the race an aggressive affair from the start. Mark Walters(Navigators) and Pete LoPinto(OFoto) attacked the HillCrest climb. At the top, they had opened almost a one minute gap. The duo worked together with obvious intentions of snatching the Liberty Cycles prime sprint in Basking Ridge. Walters was caught soon after, the result of a motivated chase by the Pharmacia team. Tom Leaper almost immediately counter attacked, escaping with Ofoto rider, Reto Lauper. Leaper would stay clear, gaining two minutes at the finish, having dropped Lauper about 15 km from the finish. The field sprint went to fellow Navigator Marty Nothstein with Mengoni's Wilson Vasquez a tight third. Former race winner, Franky VanHaesebrouche (HighGear) took fourth.
