Results and Reports for May 5-6, 2002USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Turkey Hill Country Classic (Mid-Atlantic Regional Champioships)Lancater, PA, May 5, 2002Under perfect weather conditions, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Champioships were held in Lancater, PA at the Turkey Hill Country Classic. The 77 mile event is contested for the first 50 miles over rolling terrain and then on the last five laps the riders are rerouted to climb the 17% Gamber Wall. With 35 miles to go local hero Kyle Wamsley (Fuji) escaped the field with Marty Nothstien (Navigators). The two, typcially track riders, showed their abilities in the hills and built up a tenuous lead of 1.30. The third time up The Wall there was an attck that saw seven riders go clear. These seven caught to two breakaways by the finish of the lap and the nine quickly rode away from a deminishing field. In the final lap, former Coors Light pro Steve Speaks (Mercury Atlantic) shattered the break with a hard attck that only UPMC's Joe Papp could follow. In the end Speak's took his third victory of the year, over Papp. Jon Erdelyi (Idela Tile) was the top espoir, out sprinting Ben Lindsey for third. Nothstien and Wamsley finished strongly, after all their miles in the break for fifth and sixth and the rest of the break managed to hang on, by seconds, from a charging field. Cat 3 & 4 Reid Mumford (LSV) spent most of the day 30 seconds off the front of the 125 man field. After holding everyone at bay for 50 miles, he was caught in the final straight by raising junior star Brad Vierra. He held on for second, just in front of a huge field sprint.
